I actually forgot about this game. How's it doing? I haven't heard bad news about low subscriptions before but seeing how there are layoffs...

Much better MMOs on the market.
Imagine working your ass off to get a game running smoothly, and then be immediately fired.
How does this make sense from their perspective?
You'd think big companies like ZeniMax would have multiple studios they could cycle people into, so during the planning phase you have a small team, then bring in people from whatever games are finishing up, and them when the game is mostly done you move those people into a project that's just finished planning. Or even just multiple teams per studio they could move people in.
How does this make sense from their perspective?
Because they don't need an extra 100 people to finish the game on time for christmas anymore. They can just have a smaller team to maintain the game instead of playing a much larger team for the same job. [editline]3rd September 2014[/editline] Although I don't know what they are going to do in terms of expansions and extra content. And without those the playerbase might start to lose interest.

Why not start developing a new project?
Why not start developing a new project?
Because it's not zenimax that's being hit with layoffs, it's the specific development team for ESO, zenimax online. The team was specifically made to develop an MMO so I imagine starting another MMO right after launching ESO would be a bit over the top. Realistically this is just what happens with an MMO, it doesn't take nearly as many people to maintain a project as it does to get it ready in a reasonable amount of time
