US president Barack Obama was named TIME's Person of the Year for 2012, citing his historic re-election last month as symbolic of the nation's changing demographics amid the backdrop of high unemployment and other challenges.
It is the second time Mr Obama has been named TIME's Person of the Year after previously winning the title in 2008 when he was president-elect.
TIME editor Rick Stengel announced the choice on NBC's Today program on Wednesday.
"He's basically the beneficiary and the author of a kind new America - a new demographic, a new cultural America that he is now the symbol of," he said.
"He won re-election despite a higher unemployment rate than anybody's had to face in basically in 70 years.
"He's the first Democrat to actually win two consecutive terms with over 50 per cent of the vote. That's something we haven't seen since Franklin Delano Roosevelt," Stengel said, citing the president who served during the Great Depression and World War II.
Mr Obama edged out Malala Yousufzai, a Pakistani girl shot in the head by the Taliban for advocating girls' education, for the honour.
Other finalists included Apple chief executive Tim Cook, Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi, Bill and Hillary Clinton, and scientist Fabiola Gianotti.

our Dear Leader will not be happy when he hears about this
But what about Dear Leader :(
We've been cheated.
Obama looks old as fuck in that photo.
We worked so hard to get our glorious leader at the top of that list.

It's always the editors decision. :v:
Only reason he won election is because he was going against a crazy religious nutjob.
It isn't hard to win when the competition spends more of their campaign time being stupid.
Just saying..
It isn't hard to win when the competition spends more of their campaign time being stupid.
or pretty much boasting that they only care about the rich, plus doing all kinds of shady shit with their tax records

Gas Chambers...
They've really...blacked up, Obama for that cover.
what a fucking cop-out
Obama isn't that great. The only reason he won was because of his speeches and a bad opposing candidate. His second term hasn't been good in my eyes so far.
Not surprising, really. I mean, obama's gonna pay for my house! He beat those racist-ass rich crackers! Now he can save the world from the corporations and finally give us our right to have free stuff!
Why does Obama keep getting things like these? He got a fucking Nobel peace prize for making promises for goodness sake.
Oh hi

Time person of the year isn't much

Hasn't it like just started? Either way I'm pretty sure there's someone more worthy of the award.
Dawww. I seriously wanted Dear Leader to win because I really thought it would be interesting. Didn't Obama already win POTY on his first election? Kind of milking it if you ask me..
Could be worse and they could do Steve Jobs again.
Regardless, a sad day for communism.

Well quoting Time themselves: "for better or for worse, ...has done the most to influence the events of the year." that seems about right.

It started a month and a half ago. So far he has embraced a AWB, voted no in recognizing Palestine as a non-member state. All bad things, the only good thing so far would be supporting taxes for the rich.
Overall he is a hypocritical US politician, he acts smug when he avoids questions for the sake of avoiding questions.
Really, I've got nothing against Obama, and I even kind of like him on a personal level, but when he is constantly honored and imbued with this romantic, saintly personality it just feels like we're living in some Stalininist dictatorship where we're made to think our leader is some divine being.
Of course there's also the extremist right wing people that find his every breath abhorrent, but you can't deny that outside of their circles there's some cult-like fanaticism going on there.

Except Steve Jobs never got Person Of The Year award?

Should've lived back in 1938, then: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_Person_of_the_Year
Just noticed that both Stalin and Hitler got the time's person of the year before Churchill. Actually it seems like all mayor leaders of the war got it.

his second term doesn't begin until inauguration day
his second term doesn't begin until inauguration day
Okay let me rephrase that, since he won presidential election he has been mostly shit.
He really shouldn't have selected, if Time was going to ignore 4Chan's voting and payed attention to the "No Way" votes, Malala Yousafzai should have been an easy pick. But no, Time would rather focus on politicians EVERYONE knows about than have readers be more informed about the shit that happens in North Korea or Pakistan.
It started a month and a half ago.
Uh no, actually it hasn't. The inauguration (as well as the new Congress) that follows a general election doesn't happen until January of the next year, so in this case January 2013.

Yeah, that.
