I'm here to inform you all on the wonderful scary world that is noise music, math rock, and noise math.
"But how is noise music?" you say? I should slap you upside the head. Noise music is all about dissonance, distortion, atonality, and of course noise. Modern Noise rock is credited primarily with the japanese, with such bands as Boredoms & Merzbow. And their style of noise differs from western Noise in many ways. And noise rock (like any genre of music) has hundreds of different sounds within it, some bands make bleeps and boops with synthesizers, other bands shred with a rad drummer and Bassist (using hundreds of pedals and effects).
Noise music can be fairly grating at first and is the kind of music that you need to be eased into slowly. At first I was really put off with the weird shit I'd heard, and not all the noise is for everyone, I personally dont like the ol' bleeps and boops, but prefer stuff like lightning bolt & death from above 1979.
Now for some songs!
Dead womb by Death From Above 1979: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KC7deDfftqs (this sort of music is a really good gateway into noise)
The Sublime Freak by Lightning Bolt: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5yPu4F0TPE
Acid police by Boredoms: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-9bXc-WM4Q
We Are Water by Health: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=toG4bHjPLEU (Health are argued as the greatest noise band of our generation, but I like Lightning bolt better...)
The Girl With The Wire Skull by Black Cat #13: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OgNZc60gNpY&feature=related
"Math rock?" you say? No its not people singing about calculus and parabolas, its full of wacky time signatures, and bizzaro time phrases in the music. Math rock is a rhythmically complex, guitar-based style of experimental rock that emerged in the late 1980s. It is characterized by complex, atypical rhythmic structures (including irregular stopping and starting), angular melodies, and dissonant chords. Now most math rock is a sort of noise rock, but not all noise rock is math rock. Math Rock can sound very jarring and directionless, but the best Math rock will usually have some overall theme, or direction with the song.
One of my favourite bands of all time is a math rock band, and that band is: Hella. Hella consists of Spencer Seim on guitar, and Zach Hill on drums (but zach has played with nearly every math, indie & noise, from the California region) I'm giving this special mention because Zach Hill is probably the greatest drummer we will see in our lifetime. Unfortunately, when he's going all out he doesnt sound his best, but the technicalities of it all is mind blowing.
NOW TO WOW YOU!
The Devil Isn't Red by Hella: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zGhtlhPr_Pk&feature=related
Milkman by Deerhoof: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8zbx_VIPNU
Melody 7 by Tera Melos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTnTJ8MdjEY&feature=related
Prime by Marnie Stern: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g55Zs2B6DgQ
And now for a little Zach Hill close up: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAKFjnvPHTA ( I know it's not his best, but it sounds so good, and is awesome to watch)
Now I've enlightened you (kinda) go and be free, explore this new world of music wonderment and funderfulness.
Tera Melos, Deerhoof, Lightning Bolt, Boredoms, Hella, and DFA1979 are all fucking amazing
[editline]2nd November 2010[/editline]
The little noisecore I've checked out is pretty cool too
I should have also mentioned Sleigh bells. Infinity Guitars has become my theme song lately. Sweet poppy vocals, catchy guitar riff, then it all comes crashing down in this really heavily distorted cacophony. It is beautiful ; _ ;
A noise music thread without Merzbow?
:(
I really dislike Merzbow, I prefer my music to have some kind of melody. any kind. at all.
Merzbow is cool, but the only time I listen to him is when I feel like pissing off my friends :v:
I enjoy Wolf Eyes.
Also, Zach Hill is a hell of a drummer.
tera melos and by the end of tonight are kings
midori (jp) is the queen of noise
Noise rock is great. Ambient noise is great.
The noise genre has yet to fully grow on me.
Merzbow can live in his own crazy world for the time being :colbert:

Does Fuck Buttons count

The Locust are experimental noisecore, they fucking RULE. Seriously they're like properly insane. Definitely some of the craziest stuff I've heard.
No sound for the first 60 seconds, dont even know why it's there considering its not even part of the video.

They're mathcore as well and so have strange structure and time signatures. This band change through time sigs so fast and so much that you can't ever find them really :v:
I thought this was going to be a "wtf is noise is it just someone farting into a mic or something i mean what is with that name :xd:" like when a Math thread was made earlier.
I like DFA1979, have for a while now.
Right now I can't think of anything that I listen to that fits this thread, I always listen to so much music that is just a mix of a lot of genres.
Except maybe c@, which is some kind of noisegrind, I suppose.
But I can't find anything on YouTube, because you can't include the @ in the search so all I get is random stuff that has the letter 'c' in it. :arghfist::saddowns:
Found the Myspace though, there are some songs there.
It's really weird, and the length of the songs range from 10 seconds to 20 minutes.

Good song. Going to listen to it RIGHT NOW
But I prefer Crown on the Ground tbh
Ambient noise
Like Tim Hecker?

Perhaps I should give noice music a try? I've never been into it, I've barely listened to it. Where should I begin?

Definitely. Its more Drone and Glitch sounding than noise ambience, but its properly amazing stuff. I need to try his Harmony in Ultraviolet album as soon as!!

Do NOT start with the Noise genre directly. Its a bad idea :3:
Try some more of the ambient stuff like the links above, they're pretty good. Its great music to be honest.
People call this band noisecore, but it sounds experimental to me. Kicks ass nevertheless.

I don't see what makes the first song you posted different from a regular rock song.

Haha, chainsaws ruining the song :v:

Death from above are pretty borderline when it comes to noise. One of my friends introduced me to them first, then lightning bolt and stuff. I think its the fact its a lot heavier than most rock music (ac/dc and other shit) and has a sort of messy sound, to it. Heavy bass, wacky rad drums, and layers upon layers of music.
I don't see how you could enjoy this music. In my opinion, there's nothing to make you want to listen to it. Songs need a "hook," if you will. I mean I still have plenty of crazy time signature music and some math core on my ipod, but I think some of people listen to this just to boast that they listen to obscure shit that hurts people's ears.
And those people are douche bags, you'll find them everywhere. Welcome to life!

Noise isn't music. So your point is invalid :smug:
[editline]5th November 2010[/editline]
But to be completely honest, thinking that people listen to certain music to LOOK cool is pretty foolish. Let them be.

I enjoy it cause it evokes a lot of imagery.

I like it a lot, I just don't see what qualifies it as 'noise'. If feedback and fuzz make you a noise band, then Electric Wizard is the best noise band of all time.

Electric wizard is more drone than noise.
What about EyeHateGod's "Dopesick"? It has feedback in it whenever a guitar stops playing.
