I can see why they would want to put it on Steam but what about GOG? Fallout is already well established on GOG and continues to sell, so why cut off that source of revenue? Why not have both Steam and GOG?
Because Bethesda is scared of the very idea of something not having DRM
It doesn't say that they won't be trying to get it back on GOG, it just said that getting it back on Steam is their first priority.

It's already rare for a company to address issues regarding vintage games. I bet my balls they won't.
I'm calling Bad Reading on my part, but I thought they were already on Steam?

Well it certainly helped when GOG was the hip new thing on the block.
But now GOG has a rep for selling classic old games from our past. So even if they don't get the original three Fallout games ever, they'll still do fine business.

It was. But after a bunch of lawsuits and stuff between Bethesda and the previous owners (who were the ones that had it on Steam and GoG before) it was removed when Bethesda won. So they have to re-add it.
If there's ever a game on Steamn, I check to see if it's on GOG first.
GOG bundle it up with all that additional content, it's wonderful. That, and the one time I had an issue, it was resolved within thirty minutes. Compare that to spending three days with Steam support and having to actually browse the SPUF, and yeah.
I'm lad GOG gave the games away for free as a big fuck you, though. Warmed me to my core.

Can we make this a Toxx?

it wasn't anything like that
Bethesda bought the Fallout IP and the previous owners got a limited license to sell the old games that ran out on the 31st of december, at which point the games were removed from GOG
Gone from gog now but its still in my library when i got them for free.
Jokes on you bethesda.

Oh there were lawsuits between them. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fallout_%28series%29#IP_lawsuits
Interplay tried to get the contract voided.

Bethesda doesn't have any distribution deals with GOG, so I guess they'd rather just get Fallout up on steam first while they work shit out with GOG.
Although Bethesda may not want to sell games without DRM, there's no reason against doing so now because the old Fallout titles have been DRM-free for 5 years. If pirates wanted the games, they could have got them easily within the past few years, and they could still get them now as there is no doubt that people are seeding the DRM-free copies as I write this.
Gonna put on my foil hat and suggest that Valve's market share in classic titles took a massive hit from GoG and they are trying to work out a distribution deal with Bethesda that works out for Valve.

Bethesda the developers has never been terribly bad about DRM, honestly. Hell, all the DLC they sell are totally unprotected and they operate exactly like a standard mod would and otherwise it just uses Steamworks as DRM, which is among the least obtrusive DRM schemes out there.
They're probably focusing on returning it to Steam first because Steam is the bigger storefront; they figure they would lose the most money by not having it on Steam.
