Mr Turnbull has also resigned from Cabinet. A number of federal ministers told the ABC yesterday they expected a challenge to Mr Abbott's leadership before the end of the year. Mr Turnbull is expected to hold a press conference at 4:00pm. Well this is partially unexpected. I guess the signs were there but I didn't expect it to happen this fast.
A couple of updates. Turnbull is confirmed to be standing against Abbott. And Turnbull has stood down as communications minister.
It's on! Oh man it was only a matter of time. Too bad this won't save the LNP Coalition come the next election in 12months.
Well he hit the nail on the head. Either Abbott is taken out of the leadership, or Shorten will win the next election. I hope Turnbull makes it.
Turnbull is out for blood. The transcript is here: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-09-14/malcolm-turnbull-julie-bishop-liberal-leadership-ballot-blog/6774546 Some snippets.
And we need a different style of leadership. We need a style of leadership that explains those challenges and opportunities, explains the challenges and how to seize the opportunities. "A style of leadership that respects the people's intelligence, that explains these complex issues and then sets out the course of action we believe we should take and makes a case for it. "We need advocacy, not slogans. We need to respect the intelligence of the Australian people" "Now if we continue with Mr Abbott as Prime Minister, it is clear enough what will happen. He will cease to be Prime Minister and he'll be succeeded by Mr Shorten. "We also need a new style of leadership in the way we deal with others whether it is our fellow members of Parliament, whether it is the Australian people. We need to restore traditional Cabinet government. There must be an end to policy on the run and captain's calls. Remember this, the only way, the only way we can ensure that we remain a high wage, generous social welfare net, first world society is if we have outstanding economic leadership, if we have strong business confidence.

It's on! Oh man it was only a matter of time. Too bad this won't save the LNP Coalition come the next election in 12months.
It very well could save the government.
It very well could save the government.
This guy is the fucking messiah the LNP needs.. Abbott is so fucking toxic at the moment.
Julie Bishop standing with Turnbull, but honestly I still have a feeling this will make voters very angry about how both parties are exactly the fucking same
Julie Bishop standing with Turnbull, but honestly I still have a feeling this will make voters very angry about how both parties are exactly the fucking same
Well maybe this will make people vote based on the kind of people they want in government rather than which party's leadership is the most/least stable.
Julie Bishop standing with Turnbull, but honestly I still have a feeling this will make voters very angry about how both parties are exactly the fucking same
Where did you read that Bishop is standing with Turnbull? The news was still uncertain of her allegiance on the matter.
Well maybe this will make people vote based on the kind of people they want in government rather than which party's leadership is the most/least stable.
Unfortunately I don't think that'll happen unless some major different party gains a lot of popularity quickly.
Holy shit this is great.
Apparently Turnbull has the numbers in the mid 50s. There are 102 members in the Liberal party room.

Slightly unrelated, I wonder how many liberal voters are going to let this leadership jumble slide, even though this was what the LNP was criticising the ALP about a few years back.
I guess the question now is --- when's the ballot? Also, in my OP update I added that Abbott was to talk @ 0700 GMT, it's almost 20 past and he hasn't spoken yet, neither has Shorten.

The main differential between the two parties at the moment is the public hate of Abbot. With him gone there will be more public eye on the way the labor party has been doing dirt recently to protect the unions from the cotruption commission.

I'd take a guess at Wednesday, but it's an interesting distraction for the Libs.
An insider says they have the numbers too - at least 65 to Abbott's 51 or so Looks like we might see a new prime minister! I for one am cautiously optimistic
0700 is 7am
It's GMT. Just being thoughtful to any of the other FPer's who aren't Australian, so they can calculate times.
Where did you read that Bishop is standing with Turnbull? The news was still uncertain of her allegiance on the matter.
All over ABC, Bishop stands behind Malcolm
All over ABC, Bishop stands behind Malcolm
All I am reading is that Turnbull and Bishop approached Abbott separately, requesting a leadership ballet. Can you specifically link to where Bishop is behind Turnbull, please.
All I am reading is that Turnbull and Bishop approached Abbott separately, requesting a leadership ballet. Can you specifically link to where Bishop is behind Turnbull, please.
I can't, I think I'm reading speculation but honestly it seems like Bishop is on board
Shorten just gave a flop of a speech.
I can't, I think I'm reading speculation but honestly it seems like Bishop is on board
It wouldn't surprise me after that chaperone thing; sorry for getting up in your chops, you just said it so matter-of-factly. [editline]14th September 2015[/editline] Ballot tonight! New PM by bed-time?
I think Shorten was actually quite smart to make that speech. He wants to reiterate that while Tony may be the head of the party, the party is still the party, and the fact they're changing the PM doesn't change the fact the entire party shares in the sins of the Governments last few months.
Shorten's speech was shit, and he should have just kept quiet and let the Liberals self destruct. Looks like Turnbull could be PM-elect tonight.
Shorten's speech was shit, and he should have just kept quiet and let the Liberals self destruct.
This. 1000x this.
Shorten's speech was shit, and he should have just kept quiet and let the Liberals self destruct. Looks like Turnbull could be PM-elect tonight.
exactly, why Shorten decided to open up his gob is beyond me, just sit still with Richard and wait

Shorten absolutely wants Abbott to stay on.
