Charles Addams' dark characters get the film treatment in Barry Sonnenfeld's THE ADDAMS FAMILY, which is something of a cross between the actual New Yorker comics and the 1960s television show. Not trying to lean too far to either, the movie stays at a safe plane, even incorporating a vague plot involving two grifters, Gordon and Abigail Craven, posing as Uncle Fester and a renowned psychiatrist (Christopher Lloyd and Elizabeth Wilson) who are in cahoots to rob the Addams of their fortune and house. The problem arises when Craven seems to go against his take-the-money-and-run attitude and when the Addams themselves appear to enjoy every minute that they're being taken advantage of. It suits the dark humor well, because since the Addams live in an alternative universe of their own creation in which dark is light, repugnant is beautiful, pain equals pleasure, death is life, and chaos equals order, it leaves the door open for many of their Gothic eccentricities to pull the rug over Lloyd and Wilson over and over again. It's clever, although its only problem is the "needing to introduce the characters we all know" setup which like in all movies based on comics or television shows, looks obvious.
But despite this, everyone is uniformly excellent. Raul Julia and Anjelica Huston lend their looks to embody their cartoon counterparts and are the romantics at the heart of this decidedly perverse story. Christopher Lloyd is also great in his representation of Uncle Fester. But hands down: the one who walks away with the entire movie is Christina Ricci who plays Wednesday as if she were living the role day by day. There's a sadistic gleam in her eyes and her voice that not many child actors have and I think that any other actor of the time that this film was made would have been unable to fit into this difficult part. Other than that, the tone of the movie is perfect: as dark as it wants to be, but never letting its Gothic setting drown it in an inescapable mire. On the contrary, we're constantly aware that this is a typical American family who lives upside down and who are happy in being so even when we gawk and cringe at their oddities.

Addams Family Values
On any day of the week, you could expect a newborn baby to be nurtured and loved by his older sister. Except, of course, if it's Wednesday. Pubert is the latest addition to the Addams family and, to prevent sibling rivalry escalating to fratricide, Wednesday and Pugsley are shipped off to summer camp and a nanny is hired. Debby Jellinsky is great with wrinkling baldies, which makes her the perfect nanny for Pubert and the unlikely wife of Uncle Fester. The question is..."Is she grave-digging or gold-digging?"
Review (source: IMDb)
The Addams family just got a little stranger with the addition of a new baby boy. However with the new arrival, Wednesday and Pugsley become isolated and try to kill little Pubert. With all this squabbling, Morticia sounds gets tired and seeks help from a nanny. After many failures, they settle on the sparky Debbie – although Wednesday has her suspicions. These suspicions seem to be justified whenever Debbie convinces Morticia and Gomez to send their children away to a summer camp and then marry Uncle Fester – a man so repulsive that love cannot be the reason.
Many films wheel out sequels by simply adding something to the original film; often it is a child and often it doesn't work. However with this film the child is not the focus but a plot device for bringing in a nanny who in turn splits the plot. The result is a solid plot that basically retreads the mood and humour of the original film which, for fans, is not a bad thing at all. For me I enjoy the dark world of the modern Addams family and felt that the plot did enough to be more than just the frame for it. The silly dark humour works well and it produced many laughs while also achieving a consistent humorous tone. I can understand why some people don't like it because it is the sort of thing you really need to "get" and I "got" it; also slightly more uptight parents may not like the examples set their kids in the film (but f**k 'em if they can't take a joke).
The cast are a major factor in the humour working. Although Fester is the focus of the film, Julia is still a real joy and his chemistry with Huston is really enjoyable and they make their lines work well. Lloyd is a perfect Fester and he is consistently funny. Cusack makes the most of her role and she fits in well with the tone of the film. Ricci yet again steals the film and her deadpan delivery is funny across the whole film. The support cast have lots of cameos and smaller roles and it is fun without being distracting to watch the faces including Kane, MacNicol, Pierce, Shalhoub, Lane and Sonnenfeld himself.
Overall, if you enjoyed the first film then you'll like this, and vice versa. Personally I enjoy the darkly comic tone and consistent laughs that it produced, while the good performances across the board raise the material and provide some real joys in Julia and Ricci.

Two of my all-time favorite movies! These 2 movies constitute a HUGE part of my childhood (I nostalgia'd all over the place while creating this thread). Actually, these 2 movies (along with a few more) are the reason why I like dark humor so damn much :mmmhmm:
I fell in love with both movies ever since I rented them on VHS, back when I was a kid. I like both movies equally, but if I had to choose which one is the best, I'd say the sequel is better.
The acting on both movies, is superb IMO. All the actors played their roles so well, you can't decide which one is better (actually, I've never seen a movie where _All_ of the actors are absolutely great while doing their parts)... specially Wednesday Addams (Christina Ricci FTMFTW!); I kinda hate her because I only like women with a dark and twisted sense of humor, just like the one Wednesday brilliantly displays lol (and they're REALLY hard to come by) :P
Morticia and Gomez Addams, portrayed by Anjelica Huston and Raul Julia (RIP), look like they were BORN to play those characters! They look SO good together, you can almost feel like they love eachother, for real! Same goes for Fester (played by Christopher Lloyd), and even Hands! And even little Pubert, he cracks me up every time I watch him (the name alone makes me laugh my ass off) :P
And also, how can anyone forget about the console games (specially a 26 y/o old fart like me)... OMG the memories!! *nostalgia'd all over again*
BTW I mentioned I love both movies, but I've never read the comic books. I'm craving some Addams dark humor right now, so I'm going to look for them in the meantime.
Let's discuss the awesomeness :D
These movies are fantastic. Barry Sonnenfeld is the man, and I love Raul Julia in this. Too bad Raul Julia final movie performance was as Bison in that street fighter movie.
I saw the first film a few weeks ago, I watched it not expecting much but I was pleasantly surprised by it!
I loved watching the cartoons (the old ones and the 90's one) and just loved every minte of it, I've never seen the second but I've seen 'Addams Family Reunion'...
The less said about that one the better...
Word is that there is going to be a new one made soon but as a stop-motion film with Tim Burton directing it...
At least thats what I've heard.
Looking back, I admit I had a _HUGE_ crush on Wednesday Addams :P

Oh
I remember seeing the second one on TV once when I was younger. I don't remember much about it other than Fester's wife throwing a radio into the bath with him - or something similar.
Didn't know that Christopher Lloyd played him until just now, though. That's cool.

Still I'd like to see a new Addams Family film/TV show.
I love these films. Brilliant use of dark humour. Absoloute classics!
You are now whistling the Addamns Family theme song.

I watched the shit out of these movies when I was a kid. They're still awesome today.
The cartoon was better.
I haven't seen either film but I was very fond of the TV show The New Addams Family
I've heard fans of the old ones bitch about the new one (big surprise) but whatever, it was entertaining in its own right

Most actors sign out with a bang, but

Julia had to star in a crappy film before passing away :sigh:
Good films. Haven't seen either in a long time though:(
I remember watching them when I was a kid.

It's because the new one had identical episodes, but they were made more "Kid Friendly" and funnily enough, had worse special effects.
Great movies, definitely was a big part of my childhood.
Christopher Lloyd made these films, he's just so fucking awesome.
I love the scene in the second one where Wednesday [sp]creatively changes the Thanksgiving reenactment[/sp] at Summer camp. It had me in stitches.
I've only seen the first one a couple times but I have Values on VHS, it's great and I like it more.

The moment I saw the thread I was thinking; "I hope to god someone's posted that thanksgiving scene."
It's awesome!
BTW, I just realized these 2 movies are not available on Blu-ray yet... WTF?!
Not that I'm going to purchase them, but I'm just saying :/

It says in the article they have Tim Burton in mind...
Ffffffffffffffuuuuuuu-- :smith:
Tim Burton is cool, but boring IMHO... anyhow, I can't think of any other director that could convey all the gothness and freakyness of the Addams family to the big screen than him. Let's hope he stays true to the original comics, at least :/
Loved this comment:

If they cast Johnny Depp as Gomez. I'm 90% sure Raul Julia will rise from the grave and ***** slap both Johnny and Tim on pure damn principal.
