hard drive dies while waking up but otherwise works fine

When I put my computer to sleep and bring it back, it makes it to the lock screen. The hard drive winds up and clicks several times, then stops altogether and a few seconds later I get a BSOD reading "CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED". When the computer reboots it works fine and continues to work fine until the next time I put it to sleep. This laptop has been dropped several times but not since this drive was in it.
I'm on Windows 8.1 and the machine is a Sony Vaio SVE14a27CXH. The hard drive is a replacement, I believe it's a Seagate 500gb.
Any clues? Can this be fixed? Do I need to replace the drive or can I just work around it?

I should add that I ran chkdsk and it found no problems.
Test the hard drive using SeaTools and post the results here.
It passed the SMART check and short generic so far. Doing long generic.
Passed long generic and self assess
help pls
It's stopped doing it lately and now there's no sign that anything's wrong at all.
What's the actual drive serial number. You may want to google it up to see if there's any issues with that particular model. Also it sounds like it's struggling to get park off so it can seek.
Any HDD can go bad.
I'd start backing up your stuff OP.
