I got an Asus M4A785-M motherboard installed in my computer. Now windows won't start for some reason. It take me to the loading screen and then I get the BSOD, I think, for a second and then restart my computer. I did the repair setup but it failed. I have: Windows Vista Server Pack 2 Geforce GT 240 AMD Phenom X4 965 6 GB of RAM DDRR2
Try reformatting. Always have to do that when you get a new mobo. Some reason it doesn't like it.
You have to reinstall windows for a new motherboard.
You can't just pop in a new motherboard and expect Windows to work. Windows was installed on the original computer configuration and has the drivers and HAL to work with that specific subset of hardware, not all hardware at the same time. You're going to have to reinstall Windows.
Not always the case, I've seen motherboards be replaced and Windows continues running. My friend's PC recently got "water cupped", it needed a new motherboard, processor etc but after a new set of parts the original Windows Distro still ran fine. I can't tell you why it worked then and not in your case though. When my motherboard caught the leap year bug some years ago, I replaced the motherboard, RAM and Processor and then had to reinstall Windows and lose a lot of my stuff, sad times.
God dammit, thanks for the advice, but I don't have a disk to reinstall windows. And can I use the back up and restore to back up all my files in my hard drive?

You will need a windows disk for... installing windows? Borrow one of a friend or something, the "repair" button should be able to get it working EDIT: It may be a driver malfunction too (drivers from old mobo etc), if repair doesnt work you'll need to reinstall, or have a huge pain in the ass fixing it manually
Always reinstall Windows if you replace the motherboard with a different model. No exceptions.
Also, if you want to take backups to a USB stick or something, just boot a linux live CD
It may be a driver malfunction too (drivers from old mobo etc), if repair doesnt work you'll need to reinstall, or have a huge pain in the ass fixing it manually
Maybe, my Dad's friend is going to look at it to see what's the problem, it maybe the hard drive since the BSOD said something about it when I looked. And I'll see if someone has a installation disk for vista to repair it.
I've never reinstalled Windows when changing a motherboard. What does the BSOD say?
I think it something about the hard drive but it appeared less then a second. I'll post a image later.
Hit pause when it BSODs?
Mash F8 before the Windows loading screen comes on, select "Disable automatic restart on System Failure", then boot into windows and let it BSOD, then tell us what it says
I've never reinstalled Windows when changing a motherboard.
Lucky you. I have every time.
Mash F8 before the Windows loading screen comes on, select "Disable automatic restart on System Failure", then boot into windows and let it BSOD, then tell us what it says
I can't, it just takes me to the boot device menu even when I mash it or hold it.
A computer will BSOD if the drivers from the old motherboard/chipset conflict with the new motherboard/chipset.
N:B:, it could also be a hardware problem....
