Guitar, bass and everything related discussion goes here. Getting a new amp next week, I've got $1000 as a limit, suggestions? Leaning towards something Orange or Vox.

So I got a little bit of a funny story. A buddy of mine dropped off a guitar he bought on craigslist, is it a les paul copy from the 80s. No name on the headstock and after taking it apart no markings on it at all besides a serial number. So he bought it from the guy knowing it was a copy. The guy bought it for his son back in the 80s and it ended up sitting in the closet for years. He brought it over because he bought some GFS pickups and wanted them installed as well as giving the guitar a good setup. It played decent but there were a couple high frets. I ended up plugging it in before changing the pickups out just to play it real quick and instantly I could tell something was wrong, they sounded like single coils. So I unplugged it and swapped out the pickup but my curiosity got the best of me and I pulled one of the old pickups apart and sure as shit there was a single coil hidden inside a humbucker cover. I have heard of this before but never seen it with my own eyes and it just made me giggle like a schoolgirl. I called my buddy up to tell him the story and we both had a good laugh about it, although it is kind of fucked up that they were hiding single coils in humbucker covers.
half the pickup half the price [editline]27th February 2013[/editline] I had a quick photoshoot for the new thread too [editline]27th February 2013[/editline] [t]https://dl.dropbox.com/u/8598216/pile-a-ladies.jpg[/t] [editline]27th February 2013[/editline] it's weird how purple the 8 string looks in pictures cause it's full on grey in real life

A friend of mine asked me about a 1960's Vox Panther Bass guitar that she can get for $430. It's this one in particular [url]http://www.ebay.com/itm/200899858357[/url] [img_thumb]http://i.ebayimg.com/t/Vox-Panther-Bass-/00/s/NzUwWDEwMDA=/z/RHMAAMXQKAtRJ~W1/$%28KGrHqJHJFEFEkoR+lJ,BRJ+W0oTkQ~~60_57.JPG[/img_thumb] Seems like a deal to me, but the main problems aside from the cosmetic issues mentioned in the ad (which aren't much of a concern) is how it actually sounds. The pickup is at an extreme angle so that makes me think the D and G strings will be a little more trebly than the others, but she wants a dark sound, don't know how well it will lend itself to that. Also I'm worried that if it's been played all this time that it will probably need a fret job. But my thought is that even if she has to work on it a little, it still offers the same basic features as a p-bass but it's vintage and a little cheaper than a MIM p-bass, so it should do whatever she wants it to do just fine. Does anyone have any more information on the guitar? Opinions, sound clips (I haven't found any), anything would be useful.
that bridge looks like it's like half missing
[QUOTE=absinthe;39741289]that bridge looks like it's like half missing[/QUOTE] Yeah it's missing the ashtray cover thing, like lots of vintage p basses. I think that's all it's missing at least, that's what it looks like to me.
Visiting it is out of the question?
[QUOTE=Boss;39742061]Visiting it is out of the question?[/QUOTE] I don't think so. That's the other main concern of course, the only reason I have for asking anything about the guitar is that I can't play it in person before purchasing. That's always there with ordering something online. So the stuff like how it balances, how the neck feels, the sound of the pickup, all of these are going to be a surprise, which isn't the best guitar buying situation.
I'd play it safe tbh especially with the 2nd hand market, the fact that it isn't you either and your advising someone else. Im sure that if a problem did occur nothing would come of it but you never know..... Best of luck anyway.

Anything you can actually see and play is preferable to an unknown element.
That new thread smell. [t]http://i.imgur.com/9aGYc1L.jpeg[/t] Epiphone SG Special with D'addario .12-.62 strings (Tuned Open A or B usually) Crate GT212 120w (Solid state) BBE Green Screamer (TS clone) Super barebones setup
Mine is a little fancier than yours. I'll see if I ever get a chance for a pic.
