Power metal is a style of heavy metal music combining characteristics of traditional metal with thrash metal or speed metal, often within symphonic context. The term refers to two different but related styles: the first pioneered and largely practiced in North America with a harder sound similar to speed metal, and a later more widespread and popular style based in Europe (especially Germany, Italy, Scandinavia), Brazil and Japan (early Visual Kei bands) with a lighter, more melodic sound and frequent use of keyboards.
Power metal is highly focused on the vocalist, in which most usually consists of high singing, harmonious vocals.

needs more manowar and dargonforce
Power metal's really great when I'm in the mood for it.
Elvenking gotta be my favourite band. Just love the singer, and the guitarist is truly fantastic.
They're a pretty unknown band, but I think they deserve more publicity. They're very uplifting.
Where's the Racer X, man?
Love Power Metal.
Can't stop listening to Sonata Arctica / Kamelot. Getting into Blind Guardian as well.
Dragonland, Amorphis (somewhat)
Where's the Racer X, man?
Racer X is heavy metal.
Power Metal! It's the best of the best.
I really like the Brazilian style (Angra/Burning in Hell/Hibria).
Also.. Sonata Arctica used to be great, but they really went downhill after Silence. And their new album ain't no exception. Crap. Edguy has also really lost it. From awesome Power Metal to cheesy rock music.
Couple of favourites:
Angra - Spread Your Fire (Brazil)

Domine - The Hurricane Master (Italy)

I can understand not liking the latest 2 (Although I disagree), but you don't like Reckoning Night? That was a triumph, IMO. Or Winterheart's Guild? That's not that different from the Silence/Ecliptica kinda sound.
I see a lot of potential for Power Metal in music.

I liked them alot. But they still weren't as good as the first two. Unia and Days of Grays can go to hell though. SA are dead in my opinion.
I love Kamelot.
I would turn gay for Roy Khan.

I really don't like the singer. But they have som excellent songs, like "The Fourth Legacy", "The Center of the Universe" and "Karma".

They're good
But none are even close to the power of the mighty Elvenking :colbert:
If you're gonna link a bunch of Elvenking, then don't link stuff from their worst album, "The Scythe". It's hardly Power Metal anyway. I would call them both.

Ah yes, power metal. It was the first metal genre I got into and it remains one of my favorites today.
HOWEVER.
I mostly like my power metal to have some degree of actual "power", therefore I'm more into the faster stuff with highspeed, crazy, epic melodies and choruses, riffs, and solos. Example of what I mean:
Sonata Arctica - Wolf and Raven

DragonForce - Inside the Winter Storm (go fuck yourself if you're going to bitch)

Rhapsody - Rain of a Thousand Flames

Power Quest - Far Away

Freedom Call - Warriors of Light

Sonata Arctica - The Cage

Basically, I like bands who put the "power" (whether that comes from insane speed, grand melodies, or super cheesy long songs) into power metal.
There's this really greasy, disgusting fat kid at my school, he's a sophomore I think. He smells like shit and always wears the same camouflage sweatpants. One day I saw him wearing a Blind Guardian shirt.
That pretty much sums up my thoughts on power metal.

I love Blind Guardian, but I'm skinny, don't wear sweatpants of any kind, and I don't think I smell.
I haven't heard much Power Metal, but Blind Guardian sound a lot different from what I have heard, that being Stratovarius, Sonata Artica, Dragonforce (yeah I know), and some other bands.
No Gamma Ray? What the shit?!?!

No Helloween either? Christ, they created Power Metal completely on their own.

Yes, they do have a unique sound. Hansi sings like a freak and then they add like 3 layers on top of every line. I'm not a fan of that particular aspect of their music, but they still kick ass. :3:
I listen to Hibria a good amount and love their style
I wish my voice was half as cool as Hansi's is.
I know this is extremely stupid, but I just listened to it a couple hours ago, then stumbled upon this thread.

Also, Isn't Judas Priest power metal?
They are NWOBHM.
[editline]10:17PM[/editline]
Well, Heavy Metal and then Speed Metal if anything. If you want the "origins" of Power Metal (though it isn't technically Power Metal), listen to Dio's early solo stuff.

I like Ralf way better, particularly live. I love his stage presence. Unleashed in the East is an incredible DVD. He is much more "Rob Halford" than Kai is.
God I love power metal
Saw EdGuy, Primal Fear, and Stratovarius all within a 7-day time period. Best week EVER.
Hoping to see Blind Guardian, Iced Earth, Kamelot, and Gamma Ray as soon as I can.

Take off the Blind Guardian shirt, put on one for your favourite band(s).
That pretty much sums up my thoughts on that one. There's fat / disgusting people everywhere, you can't let them decide your opinion on the entire genre.
Some power metal is good but Dragonforce is just a joke.

I still enjoy listening to The Valley of the Damned, and maybe Sonic Firestorm. After that, though, no thanks.
