• UK Has Poorest People in Western Europe, Study Claims
A new report on pay inequality claims the UK is still blighted by Victorian-style inequality, and the country houses the poorest people in western Europe. The High Pay Centre, an independent think tank which studies the average household disposable income in European Union OECD countries, finds that the UK's lowest average disposable income is amongst the worst in the entire continent - even though our richest people enjoy some of the highest salaries. The top 20% of UK households have an average disposable income of £31,670 (€39,662, $53,785) a year, which puts us behind only Germany and France. However, the lowest 20% in this country have an average disposable income of just £5,506 – the poorest in western Europe. According to the report, the plight of Britain's bottom 20% bears closer resemblance to the under-classes of Slovenia and the Czech Republic than anything to be found among Europe's economic powerhouses. "Simply, for the millions of people comprising the poorest fifth of our population, life is much worse here than it is for the poorest fifth in virtually every other north-west European country - countries we would like to think of as our equals," stated the study. "These figures suggest we need to be more concerned about inequality and how prosperity is shared, as well as average incomes or aggregate measures like GDP. The fact that the rich are richer in the UK than many other countries hides the fact that the poor are poorer," said High Pay Centre director Deborah Hargreaves. "Most people think our living standards in the UK are similar to economies like France and Germany, but being poor in the UK is more like being poor in the former Soviet Bloc than in Western Europe."
http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/uks-poorest-among-most-financially-stricken-europe-1452895
Googled High pay Centre. First Result a forbes article detailing how they're hilariously stupid. http://www.forbes.com/sites/timworstall/2014/05/15/the-high-pay-centres-horrible-misunderstanding-of-pay-and-inequality/
And yet nationalists in this country think poor people from the rest of Europe are flocking to come here and leech off our economy.
Also from the looks of it. It was a group that literally just set up a website and has no qualifications or understanding of economics but uses graphs to push politics with the guise of our poor poor income. [editline]18th June 2014[/editline] Like this math is stupid. The poorest on average are still in the top 30 percent, but somehow the think tank is saying they're the bottom 20 percent. That is extremely illogical.
poor people are treated very well and have very good means to live a decent life compared to other european countries though
It's a graph being posted and a guy saying extremely different results of the graph. They literally just started a website in order to look like they have legitimacy when they pushed out a youtube vid and claimed they were a thinktank lol.
welp i guess that solves this mystery
The reason there's so much poverty in this country is a mixture of poor housing and poor education mostly in the cities that successive governments since the 60's have failed to address.
but being poor in the UK is more like being poor in the former Soviet Bloc than in Western Europe."
if you think thats bad come to america, the poor are vilified by fully 1/2 of the government here and they don't have access to healthcare, affordable housing, jobs, and many other programs socialised europe has we do have housing but its more to keep them in one shitty area instead of in places with actual jobs
