Toyota will be bringing back famed Land Cruisers of the past, in limited numbers and for one year on
TOKYO — Toyota is bringing back the Land Cruiser 70 in Japan, catering to nostalgic demand for the rugged off-road vehicle that’s favoured for challenging terrains and as an aid agency vehicle in disaster zones.
The 3.6 million yen (US$35,000) Land Cruiser 70, the toughest of the Land Cruiser models, arrives at Japanese dealers Monday. But it’s on sale for only a year, with planned production of 200 a month.
Japan sales were discontinued in 2004, but fans have long wanted the model back because of its fun-to-drive features.
“If you ever have to entrust your life with a car, I’d choose the Land Cruiser,” chief engineer Sadayoshi Koyari told reporters at an event for car fans in Tokyo.
That's really cheap, one of the new land-cruisers in the states costs almost twice that.
Aw, only in Japan?
I want one so bad, it's affordable and it looks amazing.
Don't think I can edit the OP without having to rewrite it, here's a link to Toyota's press release. It includes pictures of the car.

[del]Bacon[/del] be proud.
[editline]Edited:[/editline]
Upon doing further research, I have discovered that Kevin Bacon's character in Tremors did not in fact own a Land Cruiser; rather, I was conflating Tremors for the Mist, and Bacon for Thomas Jane's character, who does drive a Land Cruiser. so, Jane be proud.
damn, if i were to get a new car i'd get one of these
Why would they limit the production so much when there's such a demand?
god dammit toyota bring back the AE86 and make trillions of dollars (don't even mention the new "AE86's", goddamn heresy)
land cruisers are sweet and all but damn I'd rather see them remake the AE86 corolla

They're probably more expensive to make.
If those two lower pictures on that link are the new cars then... Meh. I mean yeah they should keep it a land cruiser but they could do something different with it and not have it look identical to the prev ones.

Huh. The only Toyota I would seriously consider buying* and they're only making 2400 of them for the home market. GG.
* I have needs for a vehicle that a sports car cannot handle, but a Land Cruiser could.
Toyota Hilux 90's for life madafakas
Meh. Jeeps aren't being made in limited production and thats all america (california) needs.
Why would they limit the production so much when there's such a demand?
Well, as I work in automotive myself, I can put forward a few reasons:
Firstly, demand is probably not as high as you think. Many people say "Bring back the land cruiser!" but how many of those people will actually buy them? Probably not as many.
Getting a vehicle into mass production is very very expensive, and requires a lot of investment. Cars like the BMW Mini are produced at a rate of nearly a car a minute, whereas at 200 a month, they are producing maybe 8 land cruisers a day.
However, what is more likley, is instead of having to have machines producing every part, they will do a run of say 200 doors, then swap the tool, and do 200 tailgates, then assemble 200 complete cars once they have 200 sets of parts, rather than assembling the cars as soon as the parts are ready, so this means they can produce on many less machines, reducing purchase, running, and maintenance costs.
Production on this smaller scale is economic semi-manually, as in there is no automated production line, reducing costs further.
Also, it means they can use cheaper suppliers for supplied parts that can't produce as fast.
TL;DR you have to hit a certain volume of mass produced cars to make the setup costs worth it.
As for the cars only being in Japan, Japan are RHD, and thus tooling costs can be nearly halved by only producing RHD parts, safety testing costs can be reduced as only RHD cars need airbag testing etc...

And how many of those who say they will get it actually will? Very few people can afford to just drop 35k on a brand new car.
the toughest of the Land Cruiser models
Pfffft, the HJ47 is the toughest one getting around, what are they talking about?
Wow, that's beautiful. Love the classic look to it.

I bet they should probs do this in aus too, knowing how much of 4WD scene we have here, it'd make a fair amount. Not to forget some of those actually look quite good. $35k price tag will turn some people away though, seeing as that's just about 3 grand under the current production type sold here

Yeah, it would do well. It's just a shame they didn't look into the HJ series, especially because they're high quality and sought after. I don't know much about later models or cars in general, just basically the HJ series are brick shithouses, and becoming more rare.
Man, I'd love one of those. Beats the hell out of my Tundra.

please tell me you're joking
Is it bad I don't know the car but I know exactly where the photo was taken?
I'd love one if I had money and gas was cheaper.
EDIT: That gets 15.5 MPG for the curious.
Should bring back the FJ40. I don't like the FJ Cruiser.
Im sorry these arent new, the 70's series has been avliable for 30 years (after the 40 series finished). The new facelift model 70 series has been out for a while too in export markets, so in japan they are making the 70 series facelift avliable for 1 year only, this is news for Japan really. This model is avliable in the rest of the world as it is the 'workhorse' model of Landcruiser (like the 40 series was). it's pretty much an export model only, there are heaps of these in Australia orignial 70 series and the recent facelift model. They can be bought outright for private ownership, but really are for fleet vechiles like mining companys etc.
So if you really want one, buy fromm Australia or elsewhere the limited 2400 is for the new facelifted model in Japan.
TL;DR only news for japan.
These are still and have always been sold in the Middle East, with a new model released every year. I always wondered why I never saw them whenever I was abroad.

A bunch of people thinking the car is cool on an online forum is not the "demand" that car manufacturers are looking for.

I think the new 86 illustrates this pretty well, Toyota probably hoped that the car would have done better. People complain about the lack of power, but the original didn't have much either.

Yeah but jeeps are absolute shit.
I'll take a Toyota any day of the week over one of those unreliable, overpriced toys for teenage girls and men going through their mid-life crisis.
