• Turkey bans all academics from travel in latest post-coup measure
ISTANBUL — Turkey issued a blanket travel ban on all academics in the country just a day after suspending more than 15,000 education workers and calling for the resignation of all university deans, reported the state broadcaster TRT on Wednesday. The move is the latest in a massive crackdown against professionals in Turkey following a failed coup attempt by renegade military units that has seen tens of thousands of judges, civil servants, military and police fired or detained. The government is presenting the measures as an effort to root out a wide-ranging conspiracy led by a U.S.-based Turkish cleric and as a way of curbing the influence of the once-powerful military. Critics, however, feel that the government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is using the coup as an excuse to eliminate the last vestiges of opposition to its rule. A senior Turkish official described the travel ban on academics as just a “temporary measure.” “As you surely know, universities have always been crucial for military juntas in Turkey, and certain individuals are believed to be in contact with cells within military,” he said.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/turkey-bans-all-academics-from-travelling-in-latest-post-coup-measures/2016/07/20/f3498b44-4de5-11e6-bf27-405106836f96_story.html rip turkey
Brain drain would be a bit of an understatement for what's about to happen.
wtf erdogan
Can anyone explain to me why universities are apparently related to military coups
I'm expecting the headline: "Turkey joins the Islamic State" about a month from now.
Can anyone explain to me why universities are apparently related to military coups
I don't imagine they are, there's just been academics that've been critical of his rule. Some universities are linked to Gulen in some way iirc, but i'm not all that familiar with that bloke; just bits and bobs i've read since all this shit kicked off. [editline]20th July 2016[/editline] Academics already abroad are being told to return "within the shortest possible time". Yeah, tbh I think they'll take the dock in pay and extend their vacations indefinitely.
It certainly appears that Erdogan is trying to consolidate power and instate a dictatorship.
Expecting another coup in short time frame.
Can anyone explain to me why universities are apparently related to military coups
Erdogan gonna clean away undesirable types of education, and very probably install islamic education in its place.
If Turkey population is smart, they will displace Erdogan, or their long term development will suffer.. if they install islamic education in place.
Expecting another coup in short time frame.
Maybe the second one would actually work
And maybe it wont be faked.
Can anyone explain to me why universities are apparently related to military coups
The Gülen movement who Erdogan blames for this has a lot of schools in their name. The Erdogan/EPK claims the Gülen movement is some type of Illuminati, but nothing so far has shown its more then a loosely associated ideologie.
Maybe the second one would actually work
After arresting everybody willing and capable of pulling one through? Good luck.

This piece at stratfor really explains a lot: https://www.stratfor.com/analysis/islam-secularism-and-battle-turkeys-future They have infiltrated the security apparatus and have a pervasive presence in academia hence the current ourges
Erdogan needs to be dislodged from power by the people whilst there's still a chance.
Well then. I think it is time to get the hell out of Turkey for those who might be on Erdogan's hit list.

because people with knowledge know what he is doing, and may potentially in the future do something about it. Erogan wants to make his population ignorant so they would be easier to control, a la North Korea
This just reminds me of how the Argentinian disappearances started with targeting political opponents and then academics and suspected leftists. This is a human rights atrocity in the making. I'm almost certain Erdogan is going to get people put to death through self-selected corrupt judges to feign a degree of legality, when actually it's mass political and academic censorship and targeted killings. Nothing would make me happier than to see Erdogan at The Hague in 10 years. Convinced he's in the process of starting up mass political killings.

I think now's the time to get the fuck out of Turkey
Doesn't seem at all like you described it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G%C3%BClen_movement

Some have praised the movement as a pacifist, modern-oriented version of Islam
Ahahah yeah "pacifist, modern version of Islam" Back in elementary school I've attended a school which was owned by both AKP and Gülen affiliates (when they were still allies) and it is safe to say that Gülenists are WAY worse than AKP. Not to mention that Fethullah had to flee the country because he was so afraid of getting killed after he stated that he was interested in turning Turkey into an Islamic Republic with sharia and all that.

That a full Soviet-style purge of the country's judiciary, military, and various government ministries to suit Erdogan is better? That reinstating the death penalty is a good idea? Haha okay mate, enjoy your stay in an Islamist Turkish Theocracy.

I've only said that Gülenists are just way worse than Erdoğan and his cronies and I didn't do that to praise him somehow. Why would I praise someone who had been trying to isolate non-Muslims (such as myself)from the public by giving names to us such as "terrorists" and "traitors" for more than a decade? And why the hell on earth would I defend some Sharia supporting gang who pretty much ran the country along with AKP for over a decade, who fired any executive (including my dad) who was not "muslim" enough from the companies that they've acquired. And lastly, why the fuck would a non-Muslim want to live under theocratic order? I'd advise you to read carefully next time.
You need only read history to know that now is the time to get the FUCK out of Turkey at all costs. This shit is going to get real dark. [editline]20th July 2016[/editline]
Can anyone explain to me why universities are apparently related to military coups
Its an intellectual purge. By eliminating the educated personnel he helps to further secure his position as those remaining are too ignorant to be a threat.
Can anyone explain to me why universities are apparently related to military coups
Because educated people are less likely to fall for aggressive nationalistic propaganda.
Is it just me or Erdogan is doing the equivalent of a HL2 Citadel going on full alert? Holy shit he's fucking everything up.
I don't know why but this reminds me of Germany locking up people for that building that got burnt down when they seized power.
