[B][I]In the interest of clarity, here is the full quote from Harmonix CEO Alex Rigopulos today.

"[The Rock Band and Dance Central franchises] are near and dear to our hearts and our minds. And we have grand plans to bring back both of them with guns blazing at some point in the coming console cycle."

[I][B]The original story is below.

Today during a PAX East keynote address, Harmonix CEO Alex Rigopulos teased that the Boston area studio has "grand plans" to bring the Rock Band and Dance Central franchises to the new generation of consoles, presumably the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, and potentially Wii U.
He prefaced his talk this morning by saying he would not announce a Rock Band 4 or Dance Central 4 and he did not say if these games were in fact in development in any way. However, he stressed that both franchises are "near and dear" to Harmonix. He went on to say that the studio plans to bring these franchises to the "coming console cycle" "at some point" and with "guns blazing."
The comments today from Rigopulos are not terribly surprising. Last summer, he said that the Rock Band franchise will return "at the right point in time."
Good news, although let's hope they can revive the hype that made everyone enjoy them in the first place.
In the era of the DLC? Lets see how well this works.

Are you kidding? There's still plenty of hype for these games. They're great fun with friends. Problem is, they've been discontinued and it's impossible to find a full set for a reasonable price.
Finally
Now i can recreate my band of wife beater wearing wizards that exclusively play pop rock and classic rock tracks
Can't keep gandolf and the couch magicians away from rocking
I liked it when it was just Guitar Hero. Rock Band always seemed a bit overkill.

the rock band games already had massive amounts of DLC so i don't think they'd need to worry about that.

Rock Band partially thrived on DLC thanks to various downloadable songs and packs. So long as it isn't 'second verse, same as the first,' after a couple years of burnout maybe they can make another modest success so long as they don't start making MUSIC GAME: METALLICA and MUSIC GAME: THE BEATLES shit in quick succession again.
The issue is whether they can garner enough interest to justify the price of those damn expensive peripherals that are hard to resell.
I really wish they would do another Band centric Rock Band game, both the Beatles and Green Day Rock Band were fantastic
I've had serious thoughts of picking up all of the Rock Band games and gear and turning my 360 into a party game machine.
I've spent so much money on these games. Hundreds of downloaded songs, and several instruments (culminating in just getting an electronic drum kit with an adapter).
I look forward to hearing more about this, though I'm wary about how it will affect the custom songs community. It seems very likely that they'll block customs on RB4.
We need keytar's, people!

Way ahead of you

I never was able to get into these games. It's kind of fun watching other people fail at it though so i can see its appeal.
Playing the drums in Rock Band was awesome and actually helpful for people learning them
Playing the other parts was fun too
I fucking loved drumming in Rock Band. Some of the most fun I've had with a game.

Rock Band already had literally hundreds of DLC songs
This makes me miss the Rock Band parties my friends and I use to have all those years ago when we were all in high school or just starting out college. Maybe if this does come out those days will be back, except with alcohol involved because we're all old enough to drink. That would certainly make things more fun.

Too bad Activison fucking killed the entire series
rip in peace Warriors of Rock was pretty good
Hope they bring back the RBNetwork and make it easier for music makers to use and easier for players to find songs to play. The amount of UGC for that game was crazy
I find this excellent news. Rock Band is probably my favorite game series of all time, for many reasons. Lots of good memories had on that game.

1700 actually. Around 4 straight days of pure DLC music.
I always liked Rock Band more than Guitar Hero.
Probably because of the better visuals (more simplistic and colorful) and better collection of songs.
Hope it makes a return soon.

Plus in its later years GH was more about "check these mad skills dudebro", with the songs being weirdly mapped to the inputs in places in the name of difficulty. Rock Band was always relatively easy in comparison and a lot more forgiving. Made for a better party game really.
Rock Band is probably my favorite video game series ever, and I probably spent over 2000 dollars on all of them. As much as I'd love to play a new Harmonix plastar game, I worry that it'll be like 3 where they tried to add too many things. It fixed a lot of problems with stat tracking from 2, but they didn't really make room for the new things so it all just felt kind of cramped and gimmicky.
I'm probably going to buy it and half the DLC again anyway.

Actually, the total is 4223 (http://www.rockband.com/songs), though that number is less if you're a PS3 or Wii user.
If HMX can find a way to get DLC to transfer over to the new systems, then I'm all for it. Those games were a blast.
Problem with Rockband is that it basically did everything it was expected to do in the first game. There was little to no room for improvement that would require a whole new purchase.
If they include all the songs from RB1-3 and all previous DLC plus new songs in one game I'd totally buy a new Rock Band for PS4. Probably a little too optimistic to expect that though unless it was on like 3 disks or something.

It'd be interesting if they could get around the 1000 DLC limit that was in RB3 in an iteration for this gen. If they could, I doubt they'll package all of the songs. Licensing complications and whatnot.
