Hi, i'm a noob at this so please bear with me:
Recently my monitor is turning black as it would if it gets turned off. It happens lots of times and I need to restart it to make it work again. (for a few seconds/minutes until it goes black again)
My PC and keyboard are still working though. I checked the cables, cleaned the dust off but it's still doing this.
Thanks for any help.
It could be the panel failing on the monitor. How old is the unit?
Also if you can, try re-installing your video drivers and see if it is possibly a software problem. If a video card; take it out, clean out any dust, then re-seat the card.

If the monitor goes black and you can't use any monitor system menus and the power indicator is still on, it for sure is your monitor.
So it's your monitor that needs to be restarted?
My guess is that the monitors power supply is failing due to capacitors going bad.
Thanks for the answers guys. I figured the monitor is already too old so I'm gonna go buy a new one soon.
Yeah, I had that happen on my old monitor. You can fix it by replacing all the caps on the power supply, but that requires soldering AND I would not recommend doing that on a CRT unless you know what you're doing due to the danger. For LCD screens there are places online that'll sell you capacitor kits for most models.
We had a lot of this with the ViewSonic VA1916w model. After about 2 years the screen would go completely blank but all the button lights would still be on. Turned out to be the inverter board going funny...
I had an old screen which had the same issue happening, usually it's the capacitors in the power board, it's a cheap fix if you know how to do it, especially if you know how to do it safely, getting someone to fix it will cost you, on the other hand if your screen is old then you should save up and rather buy a new one.
