• Need a new cable modem.

So about a year ago I asked this but no one really helped me out except with a few suggestions that gave me direction. I return with a SET of questions that may help others in the future. Currently, my family uses a Comcast provided modem that has a phone jack for it's voice services. I want to upgrade this modem for savings and a higher data cap down/up. Thus here are my questions: 1.a. Is it possible to find cable modems with VOIP and phone jack built-in? 1.b. If so, what suggestions are there to use? 2.a. Is it possible to have my phone run separate from my modem using an alternative solution? 2.b. What do I need to set up in order to make this work? My budget is unlimited per se, and I am the household tech squad so I would like to know this for future reference. My internet has been derpy and I am getting download issues, firewall issues, etc. and I think it may be my modem. This change should allow me to fix said issues. [editline]11th January 2014[/editline] I did some research and now have a question [that simplifies my other ones]: would getting a new modem/router with a Digital IP Phone enhance my current setup? Forgot to mention: my download rate is 25 mbps [or ~3mBps]. [editline]11th January 2014[/editline] And we generally have ~3 devices connected and running at a time with a TV.
The problem with what you want to do is that most ISPs don't allow customers to provide their own cable modems. There are a few that allow you to use your own modem, but they don't want you to know that. And in order to use your own modem on the few ISPs that allow it, it has to be on a secret list of supported modems (which they'll probably not disclose) and you have to basically let them lock the device to only their network and have full control over it for it to work.
Comcast doesn't care what modem you use, as long as it's doxis 3. Any number of the motorolla's should do the trick fairly well. [url=http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B007IMPMW4/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&condition=new]This[/url] one will do. As far as the phone service, I have no idea. That modem doesn't support that obviously. I don't see why you wouldn't be able to split the cable line and run seperate devices if you chose to, but there may be a reason as to why you couldn't.
VOIP boxes that are internal to a cablemodem/router are usually wired to an internal ethernet port of said device. If you want VOIP, you'll also have to get a separate VOIP box, or one of those routers that has it built in.
Would a digital phone work with VOIP? (I did a bit of research and saw it as an option.)
