I get this error message when I try to run steam after installing on my new computer. I got it from a business and the control panel is extremely limited so I don't know much about it. It's running Windows XP. I allowed all the ports necessary through my router and disabled the Windows firewall.
Edit: Steam support is unhelpful.
Are you installing it by the installer from their website, or are you copying your old stuff. I'd do a full install else it might corrupt something.
I am using the installer on their website. I completely erased my first attempt and tried again without luck.
Have you re-formatted the computer since getting it? There might be some sort of program blocking it or such as you say the control panel is limited
I haven't reformatted it, I'm going to reformat it sometime this week when I get around to it. I need to put a new cd drive in it so I can burn Windows XP to a disc because it has a really old one. If I decide to install Windows 7 will the upgrade version work since I have a XP CD key?
