Offical poster: Creepy poster right? If you haven't heard, Darren Aronofsky, one of my favorite directors, is directing a new film called Black Swan. I've been following this film for a while because personally, I think his films are fucking good and whatnot, if you've seen Pi or The Wrestler, you know what I'm talking about. He mostly specializes in nightmare-ish/frantic sort of films and Black Swan is looking to be almost the same (which isn't a bad thing). Here's the plot:
A New York City ballet company is producing Swan Lake, and director Thomas Leroy (Vincent Cassel) decides to replace prima ballerina Beth MacIntyre (Winona Ryder) with ballerina Nina (Natalie Portman). Nina lives with Erica (Hershey), her overbearing mother and a former ballerina. Nina finds competition in new dancer Lily (Mila Kunis). Swan Lake requires a ballerina who can play the innocent White Swan, which fits Nina, and the sensual Black Swan, which fits Lily. The dancers' rivalry changes into a bizarre friendship, and Nina begins exploring a dark side of herself.
Basically if you've seen ANY of Aronofsky's films, you should know that the plot isn't what it seems,(Requiem for A Dream is about drug addicts, Pi is about a mathematician and The Wrestler is about...well a wrestler :v:.)So if you think the film is just about 2 ballerinas fighting against each other and becoming friends, you're a long way off. Plus the man behind the music is none other than Clint Mansell The man is a genius in original music, see The Fountain: Sorry for the shitty thread, not much info has been released, the film is set to be shown at the 6th Venice Film Festival in September so who knows how it goes.
Looks like a really interesting film. Definitely more creative than the countless romantic comedies spamming the theaters.
Should be good. He makes good quality movies.
The film could be very interesting and the trailer was pretty weird so I will watch it.
I'll wait for the news of "Natalie Portman Mila Kunis sex scene" before I decided on anything
I always found mila kunis to be ugly in that 70s show but she's gotten pretty fucking hot.
I'll wait for the news of "Natalie Portman Mila Kunis sex scene" before I decided on anything
Ass-to-Ass with Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis.
Ass-to-Ass with Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis.
I prefer ass to mouth.
I always found mila kunis to be ugly in that 70s show but she's gotten pretty fucking hot.
I get what you're saying. I didn't really find her that attractive in That 70's Show (same with Donna). What I found interesting about her was he facial structure, a lot different than a lot of girls'. She looks pretty hot now, but I wonder if that is her getting older or her being portrayed in a different role.
It looks very good, I will have to see it in theaters; I love Requiem for a Dream. I'm going to be on television, I'm giving away all the prizes.
That definitely looked way more interesting than some other shit that's coming out today. I think I could go see it. And watch Wrestler in the meantime.
Post been updated with pictures since they weren't working earlier.
Wow. Looks crazy. Natalie Portman still gives me the creeps for some reason.
The Fountain is a favourite movie of mine. But this looks sort of...okay. Mila Kunis = fap.
This definitely looks interesting, I really like Aronofsky's work, especially The Fountain.
I'd watch this purely for Clint Mansell's music. The Fountain soundtrack is beautiful. One of my favourite films, too. [editline]03:49PM[/editline] If not my favourite.
Reviews from the Venice film festival are in, and it's awesome.
Variety: “Aronofsky seems to be operating more in the vein of early Roman Polanski or David Cronenberg at his most operatic.” … “A wicked, sexy and ultimately devastating study of a young dancer’s all-consuming ambition,” … “Aronofsky and costume designer Amy Westcott are none too subtle with the film’s symbolism, dressing Nina in innocent white outfits while those around her wear darker and considerably more ominous colors. These exaggerated stylistic choices (somewhat at odds with Aronofsky’s documentary-like sense of detail and Matthew Libatique’s handheld shooting style) extend to the production design as well, adding yet another motif: Reflective surfaces, mostly mirrors, offer fleeting glimpses of Nina’s other half.” … “Coupled with Clint Mansell’s score, which expands upon Tchaikovsky’s original “Swan Lake” compositions to suggest something considerably more macabre (further aided by proper horror-movie sound design), the result is an unsettling yet ultimately intuitive blend of classical and contempo techniques.” The Hollywood Reporter: “Trying to coax a horror-thriller out of the world of ballet doesn’t begin to work for Darren Aronofsky.” … “The movie is so damn out-there in every way that you can’t help admiring Aronofsky for daring to be so very, very absurd.” … n instant guilty pleasure, a gorgeously shot, visually complex film whose badness is what’s so good about it. You might howl at the sheer audacity of mixing mental illness with the body-fatiguing, mind-numbing rigors of ballet, but its lurid imagery and a hellcat competition between two rival dancers is pretty irresistible. Certain to divide audiences, “Swan” won’t lack for controversy.” … “Portman, who has danced but is no ballerina, does a more than credible job in the big dance numbers and the tough rehearsals that are so essential to the film. In her acting, too, you sense she has bravely ventured out of her comfort zone to play a character slowly losing sight of herself. It’s a bravura performance.” … “Kunis makes a perfect alternate to Portman, equally as lithe and dark but a smirk of self-assurance in place of Portman’s wide-eyed fearfulness. Indeed, White Swan/Black Swan dynamics almost work, but the horror-movie nonsense drags everything down the rabbit hole of preposterousness.” Screen International: “Darren Aronofsky soars to new heights with Black Swan, an enthralling drama set in the competitive world of ballet. Alternately disturbing and exhilarating, this dark study of a mentally fragile performer derailed by her obsession with perfection is one of the most exciting films to come out of the Hollywood system this year.” … “a bold display of cinematic fireworks that will leave audiences breathless.” … “If you can imagine The Turning Point run through with the psychological disturbia of Repulsion or Rosemary’s Baby, you get the gist of Black Swan.” … “Portman is captivating” … “she captures the confusion of a repressed young woman thrown into a world of danger and temptation with frightening veracity.” … “Aronofsky and his faithful DP Matthew Libatique work wonders with the dance sequences, bringing them to life through ingenious and diverse camera movements, while keeping Nina’s off-stage life grainy, hand-held and claustrophobic.”
Can't wait.
Bumping this because the film is released! (Limited though.) Anyone got a chance to see it? Found out that a theater near me has a showing, so I'm headed there this weekend!
Apparently this is getting amazing reviews, like best-movie-of-the-year-besides-Inception reviews. I can't see myself watching a movie about ballerinas though.
Variety: “Aronofsky seems to be operating more in the vein of early Roman Polanski or David Cronenberg at his most operatic.”
I'm sold
This movie is easily the best of 2010 in my opinion. You guys won't be disappointed.
Stupid people will jump on the 'it was a lesbian porno' bandwagon, while it slowly fades into the 'artistic classic' genre with requiem haha.
It's rare that I find a movie that makes me excited in most possible ways
This movie is easily the best of 2010 in my opinion. You guys won't be disappointed.
Basically what I've read in many reviews for this, that and Portman's basically going to win the Oscar for Best Actress with this role. I'm hoping Aronofsky finally gets a Best Director nomination too.
I saw this yesterday, it was great. Portman gives a great performance, and I loved to have proved that Aronofsky will never disappoint me.
I'm going to go see this in an hour, actually. I'm a dancer and so I'm double excited. It really is hard to get a lead role in a ballet.
I saw it over the weekend. Was absolutely fucking incredible and I totally enjoyed every minute of it. You all need to go see it if you have it showing near you.
Oh god the skin rip, why the skin rip?
Gotta watch this very soon.
