Xbox One’s Game Recording Features Restricted To Xbox Live Gold Members
An Xbox Live Gold subscription is required to use Xbox One's DVR game-capture and video sharing functionality. Gold members will also have access to Skype and Smart Match multiplayer matchmaking, of course, as online play requires a Gold subscription.
Xbox Live Gold's one-year membership costs $60 in North America, and Xbox 360 users' existing Gold accounts will unlock access to Skype, DVR, Smart Match, and more when Xbox One releases this November. Currently, Xbox Gold members can get Crackdown for free on Xbox 360.
Xbox One's DVR captures clips at 30 frames per second in 720p, Microsoft recently told IGN. For more on how Xbox Live works on Xbox One, check out IGN's detailed wiki guide. Will you upgrade to Gold for game capture and sharing capabilities, or are you an existing member looking forward to the features? Let us know in the comments below.
Fair point.

no dude just forget about that sony can do no wrong
Forgive my ignorance, but aren't most Xbox Live players gold anyways? If I'm right, silver (or whatever the lower was) has a ton of penalties.
Users should be able to do at least offline recording without having to pay the monthly fee. This is bullshit.

Both systems require a subscription fee to play online. So its really a moot talking point.

After hearing Wargaming gripe about requiring Xbox Live Gold to play a free to play online game, the numbers they cited came out to about half of Xbox owners having Gold.
Well, Microsoft lowered the price of the console, so they'll probably need to make up the difference through Live memberships.

I'm pretty sure that the price drop rumor is false and the DVR only saves to the cloud and not locally which is why it requires gold.

That's disappointing, if I ever buy one of this things, I wouldn't expect myself to play too often and instead just play once in a while about maximum two times a week, which I wouldn't pay 60$ for every month.
And heck, I can play PC games online for free, all I need is the internet connected to my computer. The ironic thing is hat more online PC games are free-to-play, so I guess that puts the nail in the coffin for me ever to get a console from this generation. I know free-to-play games are getting ported to PS4, but if I need to pay a subscription fee to play them, then the point is kind of ruined.

F2P games and services like Netflix won't require PS Plus.
Out of all the things about the Xbox One, this is a pretty neutrally expected outcome. You need XBL Gold for many of the online features on the Xbox 360, so its pretty consistent that being able to use the game capture is another tool to persuade the consumers to shell out money. At the very least they confirmed that capture cards will work with their system, so anyone who does actually want to record on the Xbox One could always go that route.
every console has its dark side
Nintendo: Region lock
Sony: PS+ online
Microsoft: Kinect 9000/this
PC master race this time?

The online subscriptions are hardly "$60 every month", that's like, a year. (PS+ currently costs £40 a year, as does XBL Gold). Currently, PS+ also offers ten games every month for free, which once "purchased" can be redownloaded whenever which are usually big name AAA titles and some indies, Live offers like, 2, and they aren't great from what I hear (either old, or irrelevant).
Assuming Sony keep this up next gen, PS+ is worth it even if you don't go online once, that's a choice of 120 games for £40 a year. Which really is quite a steal. Though they haven't confirmed this staying the same as far as I know.
Why the fuck do MS feel the need to make almost every extra feature on their console Gold exclusive anyway? Game recording without upload doesn't need to be exclusive, if it uploads to Youtube it doesn't need to be exclusive. There are so many things wrong with their business model for Gold consumer wise. Sony have barely confirmed anything about PS+ next gen, so we can't really complain at them until they do.

but its $60 per year not per month
I'm pretty sure that the price drop rumor is false and the DVR only saves to the cloud and not locally which is why it requires gold.
Making it cloud only is a pretty dumb choice if there is a HDD installed. You should really be given the option for local or cloud (assuming you have Gold) saving, not just told "nope, pay money receive basic features".
Forgive my ignorance, but aren't most Xbox Live players gold anyways? If I'm right, silver (or whatever the lower was) has a ton of penalties.
The problem is that silver gets penalties, its not like oh hey, you get xbox gold, we throw some free games and discounts at you and give you some coll features you don't need. Its "oh I see you want to watch netflix, well you're going to have to pay twice to do that. Oh you want to use a microphone, gotta pay to do that". Its not that gold gets new features, its that they removed things to make silver.
If you don't want gold there's always getting an external capture card. I have an Elgato Game Capture HD, I love it.
To my knowledge you'd have to upload clips online to use them, so it seems like they're just covering costs.
Guess its their way of getting a cut of potential Lets Plays and such.
Does PS4 offer game recording?
Does PS4 offer game recording?
Yeah. They have the "Share" button dedicated to it.
Does PS4 offer game recording?
Yes. Though Sony haven't confirmed tons about any of the social stuff yet.
