• Alternate shells (full explorer replacement?)

Recently my explorer.exe has become a gibbering wreck of a program. It crashes when I enter certain directories and modify a file, it doesn't auto-refresh half the time. And it just slows shit to a standstill at it's own will from time to time when I open a file window. What I am wondering is, if there is a alternate shell out there that isn't too large, contains its own filebrowser (akin to how Linux desktop environments do), and is switch-able easily (this is not too important). Anything that can replace explorer entirely would be nice to know, I would try re-installing Windows, but I need to sort some proper backup out first. I don't know if it's got its own filebrowser (but you could always try something like Xplorer2 or muCommander.) But Cairo Shell (http://cairoshell.github.com/) looks promising, although it's still in alpha.
I had a look at Cairo, doesn't like 64-Bit too much it seems, and relies on Explorer as of now. Though I think getting a separate file browser might be my only option.
I don't think it's that easy to replace the browser, seeing how Explorer is integrated and all. I tried some alternative shells (bblean, that sort of thing) a year or two back, but I never used them for more than a day or two. Especially now with Windows 7 it just seems... useless.
Yeah they are more a temporary fix until I get my half decent drive back from a friend to stick my stuff on. I forgot about BB4Win. Might have a look at that. (or derivatives)
xplorer2 can more or less work as one. I'd personally recommend you divide the explorer process into two (shell and file manager) and see if both still go down. If they do just make something else, like the aforementioned xplorer2 your new filemanager.
