‘Occupy Oakland’ protester shot by rubber bullet while filming cops

In a video published to YouTube, an unidentified protester holding a video camera, filming a police line during the early hours of Thursday, Nov. 3, is apparently shot with a rubber bullet even after repeatedly asking officers, “Is this okay?”
Rubber bullets, though considered non-lethal, have killed people before. They can also cause serious internal injuries and even break bones. Despite their name, rubber bullets are small metal cylinders merely coated with a layer of rubber, and can be launched from traditional firearms. (Update: There’s been some speculation that this person may have been shot by a beanbag round instead, but it remains unclear.)
The incident took place following Thursday’s call to general strike, which saw tens of thousands of protesters shut down one of the city’s major highway overpasses. Though the event was largely peaceful, police said they made 103 arrests, mostly for protesters who failed to disperse after being told to leave public spaces. There were also reports of some vandalism and broken windows, although it was not widespread.
Police were heavily criticized for their alleged role in beating Iraq veteran Kayvan Sabehgi with nightsticks as he was walking home from the protest. Although he suffered a ruptured spleen and was in extreme pain pleading for medical attention, none was given, and officers allegedly accused him of being a drug addict. Sabehgi was finally allowed to see doctors 18 hours later, when paramedics had to physically remove him from his cell because he was in too much pain to walk. Authorities said they were investigating the incident.
He was the second Iraq veteran to be seriously injured by riot police in Oakland amid recent protests. On Wednesday, Oct. 26, Marine veteran Scott Olsen, 24, suffered a fractured skull and minor brain damage that has impaired his ability to speak after he was hit in the face with what protesters claim was a police tear gas canister.
Copy pasting from another thread since this video was posted there too:
That was one cop's actions. I didn't hear an order to fire, and by the way he was moving he was probably fed up with people yelling at him. Not to say that it's justified, it isn't. But that was one pissed off cop who got no order (at least as far as we can tell) to do that. For all we know, the cop next to him shoved him back asking "What the fuck was that?"
im gonna laugh if someone tries to justify that officer's actions
what an asshole.
What the hell was that? That's just plain stupid, fuck that officer.
Finding it hard to see any legitimate reason why the officer would do that. What threat does a guy with a camera pose if you behave?
Oh god that guy is filming us, what should we do
Shoot him, that way he'll stop filming and the footage will be discarded!

I meant that post as a joke, considering some Facepunchers' reactions to most police brutality cases
he was obviously breaking the wiretapping laws and also resisting arrest for doing so
I'm more concerned about the plainclothes officers wreaking havoc and breaking shit just to get the peaceful protesters in trouble

So he's been fired then? If he's firing potentially lethal weapons around with no orders and no legitimate reason, why is he still a police officer? If other cops are justifying his actions and allowing him to continue without any repercussions, they're almost as bad.
How was that shot justified?
Just visited the source website. From the articles on the front page, I don't trust them. Do you have a better source? I know it's a video but the source could be being misleading about the context.
holy fuck
why the hell did he shoot the guy
what the FUCK?
How was that shot justified?
It wasn't.

why does the context matter? from the video you can see what the cameraman is doing is perfectly legal and fine. he even says "is this okay?" which i assume is directed at the cops. the whole situation seems pretty quiet and unthreatening
I'm pretty sure more than one of the cops would've joined in if nobody stopped them..
So someone stopped them in the video? If they wanted to they could have torn that crowd a new asshole.
I'm more concerned about the plainclothes officers wreaking havoc and breaking shit just to get the peaceful protesters in trouble
So wait did proof come out that they're actually doing that? Or is it still just suspicions and assumptions?

I certainly hope so, not that we'll hear of that. And I agree, though there's no proof that the other policemen stood by and let it happen. The video is overall hard to analyze and contextualize as the camera cuts away.

the video is pretty fucking obvious if you actually watch it.
holy fuck

It seems he was at the front of the crowd, and therefore a easier target
why does the context matter? from the video you can see what the cameraman is doing is perfectly legal and fine. he even says "is this okay?" which i assume is directed at the cops. the whole situation seems pretty quiet and unthreatening
ur dum an obv didnt watch the vid
that wasnt a cell phone it was obv a AK47
dont you now nething
/sarcasm
Seriously, how many violent, uncalled for incidents has this been now? 3? 4?
There's this, the veteran who got hit in the head with a canister, the veteran who got beaten while trying to go home...
And you could count the uncalled-for pepper spraying of those ladies.
Not to mention the protesters getting arrested randomly.
I don think you guys are getting it, it the camera was a canon

Cops really hate cameras.

He was coming right at him! The cop acted responsibly I say! RESPONSIBLY!

you have trouble forming actual arguments and intelligent responses

Call it dumb all you want, but shortly after 9/11, there were officers infiltrating all sorts of peaceful civilian organizations in hopes of routing out the terrorists. Why it would change in this condition? I don't know.
