The upside down shooting looks so bad ass.
Ah yiss, this sexy beast. My body will most definitely be ready when this is out.
the sense of speed, fluid movement, and handcrafted episodic level design with interesting psuedo-nonlinear levels
Sold. The reason why I don't consider Strafe or DD "true" throwbacks to old-school shooters is because they got the level design wrong (that's not to say they're bad games, though). Strafe's levels are randomly generated, and DD might as well take place on gm_flatgrass and it wouldn't make much of a difference to gameplay. Making hand-crafted, well-designed levels is the right way to go.
Now this is a "retro" game I can get behind. I'm sold. [editline]a[/editline] I wish there was a place for me to throw my money at them though. They barely even have a website for the company, let alone the game.
Honestly, the upsi-down shooting is the only thing in this that looks interesting. The rest looks honestly like a bad Quake 1 mod. And I'm not an idiot, I know that much like Strafe they are going for that style graphically but flat empty fields arn't exactly doing it for me.
nobody asking the important question what happens if you land upsidedown
nobody asking the important question what happens if you land upsidedown
You do a roll and then stand upright, no fall damage. It's in the article.
i have nevet felt hype like this before, god damn it looks incredible. i want it real bad
andrew hulshult's doing the music, too, and he's already done a shitton of badass sounding doom remixes

All I'm seeing in that trailer is rectangle world and really barren outdoors. I'll pass.
Strafe's levels technically are hand-crafted though, they're made up of a bunch of hand-made chunks that are just arranged in a random order.
Because the semantics of whether or not they hand-made a wall/floor/ceiling combo and had the game auto-shove that shit together with other hand-made wall/floor/ceiling combos matters when he's arguing that the levels themselves aren't made by hand. You know what he meant.
Strafe's levels technically are hand-crafted though, they're made up of a bunch of hand-made chunks that are just arranged in a random order.
Level design, not just the polygons that makeup the level itself. Prefabs stuck together randomly is not hand crafted level design.
Level design, not just the polygons that makeup the level itself. Prefabs stuck together randomly is not hand crafted level design.
But it is? Each part is a room or set of rooms that was specifically designed with a specific layout. It isn't just made up of a bunch of randomly placed walls and floors.
But it is? Each part is a room or set of rooms that was specifically designed with a specific layout.
a room might be nice on its own, but RNG might make progression between rooms very shitty
I know, I'm just saying that there is still a decent amount of level design that went into Strafe's levels, it's just a completely random thing.
It would seem as time goes by, my wish has of having new 90's styled FPS games has been slowly coming to life. I personally don't enjoy most of the modern FPS games that are available, with their realistic physics and photo-realistic graphics. This is really good news for me, and gives me hope in my dream to eventually create a studio that exclusively specializes in games like this.
