Some of Britain's mainline train stations are being used by fewer than 30 people a year, a new study suggests.
Teesside Airport station, in Darlington, had just 14 passengers between 2011-12.
Surrey's Dorking West had 16 passengers, while Denton in Greater Manchester had 30.
First Great Western, which runs services through Dorking West, say there is "an anomaly" in the calculations and the figure is wrong.
So if 29 people use it every single day, does it get on this list?
From what I understand, train fares in the UK are insane. Flying to another country is cheaper.

England to Scotland is vastly cheaper by plane.
It's also ridiculously expensive the closer you are to London to even get anywhere.

That depends. Most of the time it is cheaper than the cost of petrol, plus you're not stuck in a car for however many hours. If you get a rail card it's a lot cheaper.
Depends how long you book in advance really.

Yep, london is more expensive than other parts of the UK for no real reason
Not surprised, there are some tiny stations in places it's no wonder people don't use them often.
for me to go to Leicester it used to cost £6.19 now its about £9.70 for a 20 minute trip (40 if you count the return) so you could imagine why these stations are hardly used
Reminds me of something like:

WHY DON'T YOU CUNTS WANT TO USE MY TRAIN STATION
WHY
JUST FUCKING WHY
I go from Nuneaton to New Street station in Birmingham 5 days a week and have a rail card.
its costs me £6.60 on an open return. that would be cheaper than an hours worth of petrol and cheaper than paying parking.
Plus its a hell of alot more convenient, you would have to be mental to drive through the middle of Birmingham especially when I work on broad street.
To get from windsor to kitchener its about $60 here in canada, and thats one way

It costs almost that for a return from Redditch to New Street.

The only gripe i have is the new concord opened at new street this week and it is confusing as fuck.
Denton in Greater Manchester had 30
There's a train station in Denton? What the fuck I live in the fucking place and never known this.
Why am I not surprised about this?
My nearest station, Bedhampton, is always empty, and hardly anyone gets off there. This is because hardly any trains stop there, so it's like a Catch 22: trains don't stop there because people don't get the train from there because trains don't stop there, ad nauseum.
It's not even like it's on a quiet route, it's on the line between Portsmouth and London so it's always full of commuters and tourists.
I laughed at "Dorking West"
I am a typical american
So between the outrageous gas prices, outrageous insurance prices, and outrageous train fares, does everybody in the UK just sit at home and collect welfare or something because you literally cannot afford to travel outside walking distance?
It's a tiny fucking country, you should be able to go anywhere for almost nothing.

Sadly, we decided to privatise all of our public transport, which quickly got bought up by large companies who found it better let each other run monopolies in certain areas, or just bought the franchise rights to railway lines, so they can charge whatever the fuck they want to. It's better in London because of how TfL is run though.
Not sure how I would cope if I had responsibilities as well as travel costs..
When I was at college it cost
£3 bus
£7(IIRC) train
25 min journey.
It's really weird. Train fares that only traverse a couple of stations are normally really, really cheap, but as soon as you start travelling from one 'section' of the UK to another, they get obscenely expensive. It's almost like the train companies want people to get planes for long-distance journeys.
Whenever I use the trains in the UK i get on when the station barriers are down and pretend to be asleep on the train. Save myself about £40 per trip when i go see my girlfriend.

Lucky you get away with that, the ticket guys on first great western like to vigorously shake you and yell in your ear until youre awake. Cunts.

Man, that's ridiculously cheap - the equivalent journey here (Aberdeen to Dyce Airport) would be about £20.
The reason they're finding this kind of thing is because the train fares are too damn high.

Maybe you should go outside more
Maybe stop raising the train fares every year and more people would use your service.
There was a guy organising a flash mob to raise awareness for the Teesside Station's existence once upon a time but nobody showed up.

I once read somewhere that rail fares are now 20-30% higher than they would be if BR still existed. I can't remember how they worked it out, I think it was based on inflation+normal fair rises. Not to mention that more is paid out in tax to Network Rail and train operators than was ever paid out to BR.
I really think this is one of the shining examples of why you shouldn't privatise some things, or if you are going to do at least do it right.
The people working those trains must be bored as hell.
