Despite having their feet back on solid ground and making their way home, passengers from the Carnival Triumph cruise ship are still fuming over their five days of squalor on the stricken ship and the cruise ship company is likely to be hit with a wave of lawsuits."I think people are going to file suits and rightly so," maritime trial attorney John Hickey told ABCNews.com. "I think, frankly, that the conduct of Carnival has been outrageous from the get-go." Hickey, a Miami-based attorney, said his firm has already received "quite a few" inquiries from passengers who just got off the ship early this morning. "What you have here is a) negligence on the part of Carnival and b) you have them, the passengers, being exposed to the risk of actual physical injury," Hickey said.
http://abcnews.go.com/Travel/carnival-cruise-ship-now-faces-expected-wave-lawsuits/story?id=18509079 Really stupid that they would sue seeing as the ship had no control over what had happened on board
Really stupid that they would sue seeing as the ship had no control over what had happened on board
On the contrary, if what's been flying around turns out to be true, they had numerous problems maintaining the engine beforehand. If that's true, then they did indeed have control over what happened on board, tried to cut corners, and are most deserving of anything that comes their way.
Well, you did maroon them in a floating, shit-smelling hell.
They were cruisin' for a suitin'.
I don't understand how a bad motor could cause the plumbing to go bad
I don't understand how a bad motor could cause the plumbing to go bad
I'm guessing the engine keeps the sewage pipes under pressure so that your shit doesn't come up again.
Really stupid that they would sue seeing as the ship had no control over what had happened on board
I'd agree if they hadn't paid a lot of money to go on the cruise in the first place. At the very least, they deserve compensation. Besides, any sharp business has tort insurance, especially one that deals in cruises.
I'm guessing the engine keeps the sewage pipes under pressure so that your shit doesn't come up again.
I'm reading on wikipedia and it says that the emergency generators restored the freshwater system and half of the plumbing by the next day why didn't they just go to the side that had plumbing? [editline]15th February 2013[/editline] and why even store the shit? you have a whole ocean to dump that organic waste into if something goes wrong
I could have sworn people were required to sign papers when attending this sort of thing stating THE COMPANY IS NOT LIABLE FOR WHAT HAPPENS TO YOU ON BOARD
I could have sworn people were required to sign papers when attending this sort of thing stating THE COMPANY IS NOT LIABLE FOR WHAT HAPPENS TO YOU ON BOARD
United States Maritime Law > "LEL U CANT SUE US KTHX" also, what's with your avatar?
a) negligence on the part of Carnival and b) you have them, the passengers, being exposed to the risk of actual physical injury,"
Because a. People have been praising the crew for all their efforts, and b. You were stupid enough to get on a fucking boat.
also, what's with your avatar?
Sex
United States Maritime Law > "LEL U CANT SUE US KTHX" also, what's with your avatar?
Cropped porn avatars are all the rage because they are so clever and funny.
Curise ships became a mixed blessing here as fun but also greedy. You get about a dozen ships that leave Vancouver on a ragular basis and go up to Alaska and back in a week and try to cut corners to speed up the turnaround. There was a shitstorm (no pun intended) when one of the companies started dumping sewage before entering Burrard Inlet so they didn't waste as much time at Canada Place pumping their tanks out.
I could have sworn people were required to sign papers when attending this sort of thing stating THE COMPANY IS NOT LIABLE FOR WHAT HAPPENS TO YOU ON BOARD
Liability waivers aren't unbeatable, particularly if the negligence is gross.
I'm not entirely sure what suing Carnival en masse is going to accomplish besides clog the courts up. Either A: Carnival fucked up, in which case the Coast Guard is going to come down on them like a goddamn meteor and likely levy penalties that include substantial restitution payments to the crew and passengers as well as full reimbursement of any medical bills incurred due to the ordeal, or B: They did nothing wrong, in which case the courts are clogged with thousands of pointless suits. Not that it really matters. I'm sure the moment Carnival's execs heard of the ship foundering they stuffed a few suitcases with payout money. Bet ya 95% of the lawsuits will never make it to trial.
I don't understand how a bad motor could cause the plumbing to go bad
If the engines go offline, there's no power. If there's no power the plumbing stops working, as there's nothing to power the pumps that circulate water around the ship. If the plumbing stops working the toilets, obviously, aren't going to flush. Why the ship didn't have a backup generator online I don't know, though. I do know that, if I were running a cruise line, I would demand every ship be equipped with at least two backup diesel gensets that have their own fuel supply, for use when this very situation crops up. Each one would be strong enough to keep the plumbing and lights going, as well as run communications equipment and bilge pumps. I can be certain that, had I been running Carnival, this would never have happened. The ship may still have foundered but all vital subsystems would have stayed running, and if by some random chance neither backup engine would start I'd personally fly a helicopter carrying yet another emergency generator out to the ship.
The article says that there were problems with the engine room several times before, so there really is no excuse on Carnival's part.
They're getting refunded, discount vouchers, and $500 for their troubles. Not only that the tickets themselves are basically a waiver. Unless you suffered an illness or physical injury you're out of luck. The passengers are getting more than the cruise is obligated to pay already
LOL "wave" "Cruise Ship" ... ok AP Lit is getting to me
Don't worry everybody, they are swamp donkeys. Nobody loves them anyway.
the only thing i've taken away from this is that cnn probably spent more time on this story than fucking katrina
It's going to be tough for that company: "So when you lost power and the toilets didn't work, did you have a plan?" "Hell yes! Do you think we're incompetent?" "Will you kindly tell the men and women of the jury your plan?" "We provided the passengers with plastic bags, for pooping. Twist ties were available too...free of charge...limit one per passenger."
LOL "wave" "Cruise Ship" ... ok AP Lit is getting to me
I should hope it didn't take you until AP Lit to understand basic word associations...
