Hey guys, so i have a Sony Vaio (not sure which one) and I was sleeping last night and i woke up to my computer shining, so when i look at it, it's a black screen that says "OS cannot be found". I don't have the startup disc because it wasn't included with the laptop, i just downloaded a repair disc, and that doesn't seem to work, do you guys have any idea on how I can get this fixed?
Download a Linux Ubuntu .iso, burn it to a CD or put it on a storage device. Put it in your laptop and run it, then click try. This way you'll be able to see if something is missing and provide more information on the issue. You will have a working laptop too. This will not make any changes to anything on your computer.

Alright, going to ubuntu.com and downloading the 64-bit version right now.
EDIT: So I just booted it back up, and it's working again (?) i'm currently in the process of restarting it so i can run a scan in safe mode to ensure that there are no viruses that caused this problem. Do you guys have any recommendation as to how I can prevent this problem from occuring again? This is the second time this has happened, and I wouldn't like for it to happen again, im still downloading Ubuntu for a just in case purpose
EDIT EDIT: It happened again after i rebooted it ><.
Oh boy... Is this the only issue your laptop has?
Does it have massive slowdowns, any other corrupted files, etc.?
Do any strange sounds come from your hard drive?
This happened to my old laptop. It would BSoD and reboot saying "Operating System Not Found" and be really slow upon opening programs and loading webpages, the entire time the HD activity light was going nuts. Even did it after reformatting 4 times. Granted it was a Gateway (yuck) but hard drives do fail no matter what brand...
It was fixed by replacing the hard drive. Ran like new.
Make sure your boot drive is set properly in your BIOS.

This is important
IIRC, My brother had his computer trying to boot of his D:\ once...
how do i set my boot drive? and how do i install linux? we have 2 laptops in the house
hit Del or something at start up, It'll tell you what key to get into BIOS
Then once your in the BIOS, look for something along the lines of Boot Device(s)
as for installing linux... I believe you'll need to download a linux iso and install off the disk...
I've never done it before.

You don't even have to install it, so it's really just burning it to a disk and make the BIOS boot from that. Then just hit "Try". You won't have any problems with it.
On startup hit "Del" or "F2", it might be different on your laptop, but just try around then. In the BIOS you have to go to "Boot" and under that change the boot priority to something like this:
1st Disk
2st External Device
3st Harddrive on this computer.
And smack your cd/USB-stick/somethign else with the .iso on it, and then you'll just have to reboot and wait for the Ubuntu installer. Then just hit the huge button saying try. It'll now boot, and it'll probably take some time as a CD/DVD ain't as fast as a HDD.
Alright, i'll try these things and update you guys, need to write a paper right now, so it'll be a while, thanks for the help so far.

Why get the largest Linux distro just to browse around the HD?
Ok, so my thing was set to Optical Disk Drive, so i just set it to HDD for first prioty and second priority External.
EDIT: That seems to have done it, thank you so much for the help. Are there any tests that I should run? And should i still install linux?
EDIT: Nvm, it's still doing that crap ><

Linux won't fix the issue, but you'll ahave a working OS to look around on.

It's also the easiest one to set up.
Did you actually BUY the OS your currently running?
Think it might be something in the internal computer rather than just files and such?
