• Stuttering ATI Radeon HD 3850 AGP, Driver issues?

Just upgraded an old AGP rig on XP with an 3ghz pentium 4 and 2gb ram from an 7800 GS OC to a 3850. It got up and running OK and seems to work normally however it cannot run any game normally and begins to stutter after a few minutes of gaming on most games and gets around 30 fps until it begins to worsen (apart from BF2 which is just unplayable around 2fps to 5fps whereas used to get around 30fps to 60fps on the 7800 GS). After that it will hardly run things like youtube without stuttering. I checked the temps and it stays within 40C throughout so that is not a cause. The only thing I can think of is the drivers, Which I have had trouble with from the start. It seems ATI do not support this card and the drivers on the disk were out dated and also did not work (failed with driver signing at the end of installing ATI catalyst and will not run CCC) and had to download and install manually the latest hotfix from ATI atleast, I think that's what i did. If somebody could direct me to make sure that would be a great help to me. It's not just a bad computer either, The rig could handle many games before (such as Battlefield 2 and source games) fine but since I upgraded (changed the hard drive and the Graphics card) The games have become unplayable.
I am pretty sure ATI still does: http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=xp/radeonx-xp
I had used this card until I got a new Pc in November. They do still support this card. Try installing the above drivers.
Ok thanks I'll try this soon, I heard that ATI didn't support it.
3850 AGP cards are not compatible with the standard Catalyst drivers you need the drivers from your manufacturer or the AGP hotfix drivers that AMD/ATI provide since not every manufacturer bothers updating their drivers every month like they are supposed to.
How do you recommend uninstalling drivers out of interest? By using a driver cleaning program or add/remove in control panel?
Right, I've installed that driver now. Will test out some games and see how it works. Didn't get any error messages but it doesn't seem to have CCC... Well it's not on the taskbar atleast. How can I tell if it is installed correctly? Also I didn't think about this before but could it be due to the card being underpowered? It came with a strange 6pin to 4pin x2 adaptor (I think, I will double check later) but I thought since it was supplied I might as well use it... Would I be better off not using it?
If you have on your PSU two 4 pin PCI-e power connectors then use those, otherwise use what was provided in the box because that is the only way you are going to be able to supply power to your GPU. I believe you may also be able to use a 6+2 pin or an 8 pin PCI-e power connector also.
If all else fails, reinstall Windows. I do this every 3 months or so just to clear out all of the unnecessary clutter that builds up over time. I have my documents on one drive and windows on the other, so it's pretty easy to do.

I'll do it in a few days and let you know how I get on. Thanks everyone for your help
Ok, reinstalled windows and it worked great for about 2 days! Then it started up again.. didn't really install anything apart from Games and drivers ect. then it started to become unable to play games after around 10 mins of playing. (or not at all and just stutter from being played) Any ideas?
I don't understand this.. It worked fine for a few days on the latest drivers and managed to get ATI tray tools running in the system tray but now it just stutters like before! What could be causing this?
Have you tried checking the temperatures?

What are you talking about?
Have you tried checking the temperatures?
Do this.
As in the OP, the temps region between 30C and 40C.
Ok now it stutters on youtube and simple flash programs! Like this is really annoying now! It can't handle any games without stuttering! What could be causing this?! A netbook can watch youtube! Why can't an 3ghz P4 with 2gb of ram and a 3850 !? Do you think it could be the old hard drive 80gb or something? I really need some suggestions! :frown: [editline]07:56PM[/editline] Ok found that was teamspeak making the audio stutter on youtube but the computer itself cannot perform basic tasks after playing a game for over like 10 minutes anyway! It's back to how it was before :frown: what could be causing this! ?
OK well uh I was thinking that maybe this could be a power supply issue? Could these be the symptoms of an underpowered card? :frown: sorry for trying to keep this thread alive but I really need some help with this..
It may be a power supply issue but we can't really diagnose with out being there to actually see it. We also don't know who makes your PSU, what its wattage is, how many amps it has on the +12 volt rail(s), etc. You could also have a PSU that is good quality but is just plain dying, but we can't know without you first giving us this info.

Never buy a cheaply made PSU.
I was young and stupid! STUPID!!!!
it's the textbook shitty gold BLING BLING one so I'd agree with this completely
Ok Ok but would that be able to cause these problems? I mean I know its shit but i don't want to cough up another £50 to find it has nothing to do with it.. (still working on getting them rails at the mo, the pc is not with me right now)
