He will use it to game and stuff. Steam too. I'm sure downloads will suck allot but whatever.
I just don't want to pick a random one since last time I got a wifi card for my parent's PC the drivers sucked so badly and it causes constant lockups and BSoD's. I removed it and no issues now. Also it only got 2/3 bars when it was super close to my router. Downloads that would take a min tops on my wire connection could take almost an hour on theirs.
buy something that is the same brand as his router
usually works the best
Brand doesn't matter, it's the same standard.
Unless you're using a piece of shit crap you bought in a side-street in China that actually uses some proprietary protocol.
I think what QuAtT means is, buy one which is on the same wireless standard as his router. Eg. if his router is Wireless G, buy a Wireless G card, etc.

Some of the single antenna cards come with really shitty antennae. Try to get a duel antennae card.

Almost all reviews speak of it dying soon.
Well, he shouldn't need to get a wireless card all together. Mine was broken and I got the D-Link DWA-130 USB Wireless adapter. It works miracles, it can grab a connection from a pretty hefty distance, and speeds are quite good. (15mb/s download, 1.3 mb/s up. Hardwired: 17.2 mb/s down, 1.7 mb/s up.)

I'd recommend this:

I have 3 of them and they work like champs. They have a ridiculous signal pickup range too, and you can boost it with a 6' USB extension cable and a special antenna by putting it higher up in the room.
I highly, highly, highly, highly recommend this model: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833166056
I use 4 of them on separate PC's. Feels sturdy, looks decent, installs in seconds, the base for it is very convenient for desktops. I get 95% signal from about 70feet away, through 7 drywall/stud walls in my home. The software it comes with is rather intuitive and has some good features.
It's inexpensive and has been working fantastic on all my computers for a long time. I'm picky when it comes to my network devices but this one has been a joy to use.
