Massachusetts accountant Carl Sorabella had every reason to believe that his employer would grant his request for a more flexible schedule so he could assist his wife, who had just been diagnosed with lung cancer and given only months to live. After all, he'd been with Haynes Management in Wellesley, for 13 years, and had just been given a raise in November.
But instead of a more accommodating schedule, he got a pink slip in response to his request, even though he had made it clear he was willing to work nights and weekends to make up for the time he intended to spend taking his wife in for treatments and tests.
Here his wife of 23 years was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer -- she had 55 nodules on her lungs--and after almost 14 years of service, his boss told him, "It's business. I'm running a company here, and I need to make sure the department runs." Sorabella assured her he would make sure the company runs, working at any hour of the day or night to make up the time he spent caring for his wife, but to no avail.
orabella says his boss told him they were thinking about laying him off anyway, due to "modifications in workforce requirements." He thought, "you can't do that!" he told Boston's ABC affiliate. He says he later saw an employment ad for his old job with the same company.
Unfortunately, Sorabella has no legal recourse. Federal and state laws that protect workers from this kind of treatment only apply only to larger companies with more than 50 employees.
At the moment, Sorabella is on unemployment, and his wife is on disability. "We don't know how our bills are going to be paid. But we keep telling each other as long as we love each other -- it doesn't matter," Kathy Sorabella told the WCVB reporter.

That's just really sad :smith:
That's messed up.
Well, we all know what's going to happen in the end anyway. :downsgun:
Talk about unlucky
She was only 23? Such bullshit, that sucks she can't live a full life now.
No, they were married for 23 years.
She was only 23? Such bullshit, that sucks she can't live a full life now.
I believe they'd been married for 23 years.
Edit - Sniped goddammit.
Has the boss no shame?
Shitheads like these (AKA the boss) makes me not want to live on this planet.
Also wrong section.
Has the boss no shame?
Although, what if the boss genuinely couldn't find a way for the company to afford it?
Dick move
This is fucked up.
The boss is a woman, what a bitch.
Although, what if the boss genuinely couldn't find a way for the company to afford it?
Small company, no loss of work hours. I doubt it. Heck, maybe it's time to allow people to work from their own home if that's possible for that kind of job.
Although, what if the boss genuinely couldn't find a way for the company to afford it?
How is that possible. All the guy was asking for was work shift re-arrangements, not more hours.
Sue.
Has the boss no shame?
No. That's what being a boss is about usually.
Sad but true.
Although, what if the boss genuinely couldn't find a way for the company to afford it?
If he can afford to just completely fire him I don't think that shift changes would be impossible.
Stage 4 lung cancer.... she won't be living too long... :smith:
If he can afford to just completely fire him I don't think that shift changes would be impossible.
Shift changes can be more expensive than just firing the employee. If you can get whatever service or product produced during peak hours, the company will eventually start hemorrhaging money.
Wow, the boss is just cruel. He could've put it in a nicer way.
Wow, the boss is just cruel. He could've put it in a nicer way.
More like she. What a bitch.
Fucking dick boss
Wait, so he said he'd work more hours if required to make up the time he'd have to spend taking his dying wife to treatment so he gets fired?
:eng99:
Holy fucking shit that is sad :smith:
America :allears:
That's what you get for voting for people who'd rather make it so the CEOs get more money at the expense of worker protection and health care programs!
some people in this world i tell you
Has the boss no shame?
Psychopaths - people who have an actual mental disorder which causes "amoral/antisocial behavior, lack of ability to love or establish meaningful personal relationships, and extreme egocentricity" - are the ones who tend to get ahead in the business world. It shouldn't be a big shocker that the owner of a company would do something like this.
I'm just surprised his boss isn't a congresswoman or a senator, she sounds like a real ruthless bitch.

Actually, this happened to my family. My father was laid-off from his work and about that same time my mother was diagnosed with Lymphoid Cancer. Needless to say Summer 2008 sucked ass
If you google the company name (I was about to email them), they've been given some nasty reviews, and their website is now down.

The ironic part being that all the people attempting to ruin the company aren't really going to do any good, seeing as if the company dies he's DEFINITELY not getting his job back, not to mention everyone else at the company will lose theirs.
