A prominent student activist from Oxford University is resigning from her political posts and campaigns after admitting she failed to obtain full consent before having sex at a conference earlier this year.
Annie Teriba, a third-year student at Wadham college, was the editor of No Heterox** – described as a zine for queer and trans voices – as well as a racial equality officer and member of both the National Campaign Against Fees and Cuts committee and the NUS’s black students’ committee, according to the independent Oxford University newspaper Cherwell.
“At this year’s NUS black students’ conference, I had sex with someone. The other party later informed me that the sex was not consensual. I failed to properly establish consent before every act. I apologise sincerely and profoundly for my actions.
“I should have taken sufficient steps to ensure that everything I did was consensual. I should have been more attentive to the person’s body language. In failing to clarify that the person consented to our entire encounter, I have caused serious irreparable harm.”
Her apology has not been accepted.
What a world we live in
At least she realized that it works both ways.
While I'm sure it won't stop the nutcases that want written permission before having sex, it may convince this woman how stupid her position was.
Well I mean at least she's honest and pretty honourable about it
Altho she of all people should know better

It seems like she might be be viewing herself as a rapist...
To be fair if what she was doing was bothering the guy he should have just asked her to stop.
But the Women’s Campaign, an autonomous political group within Oxford University Student Union (OUSU), said Teriba’s admission was “rife with apologism”.
Apparently "apologism" now means literally apologising?

I have a strong suspicion that this went down kind of like this "Did you like it?" - "Yeah, just that one thing you've done wasn't that great", aaaand it's "not consensual sex". Because the way she goes about it seems to imply something like that to me, maybe I'm wrong.
I don't understand anything about this article.
First of all, what was she doing trying to hook up with people at conferences, is that just like a thing?
Second, a conference is not exactly a place where people might get impaired through alcohol or something, how could of this taken place with out the other party being comfortable about it
Third, if the second is true, are we to believe someone seriously just slept with a consent activist to make a point?
Fourth, these sources are fucking terrible holy shit. Is using archive links against the rules?
Am I supposed to yell "AM I FREE TO THRUST" during the entire act, or...
the editor of No Heterox** – described as a zine for queer and trans voices –
Gross.

Both of these things are things that happen. This is a student union conference, not a scientific conference, anyway.
It's not sexy at all to ask for consent.
Fucking rapist, hope she rots
All women are pigs
But in all seriousness, what the hell is going on here. Is it meant to be satirical or... ironic in some way?

This is the reason its so alien for men to be raped. Consent works both ways, believe it or not.

How could it not taken place without the other party being comfortable about it? Consent isn't some black&white thing and the point isn't to find the victim and the villain in the equation, and I think this case demonstrates that point.
If the equality officer was dominant in the act didn't dare say until after that they didn't really want it, technically nonconsenting sex happened but has anybody involved really done wrong?
Seems like the common thing to do would be to prove that the initiator of the act did not have "enough" consent to prove them guilty of rape or whatever, in order to serve "justice" and close the case. I think that's an oversimplifying and reactionary approach. This seems to be the standard she is judging herself by, on behalf of the society.
In this case, we know the other party didn't like the sex, but we don't know if they hated it either. We also don't know if it was a guy or a gal or what so we can't make arguments about genders either.
In my view without speculating, since we have so few facts, the only thing there is to discuss is that if the current approach to people have is really fair or as in line with reality as it should.
At least she realized that it works both ways.
Well considering her affiliation, it seems she slept with another chick as far as I can tell. So it's technically still just one way :)
Apparently "apologism" now means literally apologising?
Apologism is different from apoligising. It's when you create an apology just to appease others, when you don't actually mean it. When you thrown thrown in as many little tidbits of emotion as you can to appeal to others.

So the vast majority of apologies, then?

Huh? I always read "apologism" as trying to excuse a behaviour, change people's mind about something they've accepted as "bad".
I fucking hope to hell that PC is just another fad that's gone and dead before we know it.
All these sheltered 90's kids revealing their shitty parenting and overly effeminate qualities. Could you imagine this shit 100 years ago? 50? What a joke.
The scary part is that these idiots are now voters..

50-100 years ago you can imagine gays and blacks being lynched on the streets and shit. Times change. Don't act like such an old fart, you're a voter too and people who are stuck in the past are just as bad at the whole voting thing.
She should turn herself in for rape if she's that concerned about it.
So when will she be arrested?
So when will she be arrested?
I thought the none consenting party would need to report it first?
So when will she be arrested?
She wont,1-(1) A person (A) commits an offence if—
(a) he intentionally penetrates the vagina, anus or mouth of another person (B) with his penis,
(b) B does not consent to the penetration, and
(c) A does not reasonably believe that B consents.
Notice the use of he.
It seems like she might be be viewing herself as a rapist...
Probably because she is so uhh?
Because you know, sex acts without consent is like literally rape.

NUS conference = hotel rooms, lots of pubs, lots of like minded people, wouldn't surprise me if you hook up with someone.
people aren't psychic
imo if you don't consent to something you should say so then and there, not 'later'
you don't get to apply hindsight to the situation if the other person doesn't
obviously there has to be allowances for people consenting under duress/being unable to give it due to being drunk etc
While her definition of rape is retarded at best, it's great that she practices what she preaches.
