Recently I picked up an LCD monitor fro free from a computer recycling center near my house. Considering it was free I didn't examine it that close. I got home and discovered that it doesn't use a normal computer power cable but rather it requires some sort of adapter that feeds it 12V at 4 amps. I happened to find one around my house that gives 12V at 1 amp. The monitor turns on but stays in sleep mode from what I am guess is lack of power (dur). So my question is if it's possible to modify the adapter I have or the monitor so I can use it.
Find a computer power supply, They usually have 15-25A on the 12V Rail.

But wouldn't that fry the monitor?
Yes.
No it wouldn't
Amperage is MAX amperage, It's what it can GIVE reliably, Having an overpowered PSU does not fry the thing attached to the end.
If I attach a light bulb that uses 4 Amps @ 12V (Hypothetically) to the PSU, the PSU will deliver 4 Amps (IT doesn't exactly work liek that, I've simplified) These are switched mode power supplies.
For what it's worth, I've used Computer Pwoer supplies for damn near everything, My electronics bench has one to power circuits. I've used one to charge my mobile phone from the 5V rail before, I've used one to force a TV to A/V (AV Switch pin), I've used one to power a Car amplifier and I've used one to power a digital metronome I had built with a PIC16F628A.

Alright I hooked it up...used the yellow rail and a black for the negative. It turns on and stays out of sleep mode until I turn on whatever it's connected to...then it shuts off completely...as soon as I turn off say the PC it's connected to it turns back on. Any ideas?
P.S Does it matter which black wire I use for the ground?
Have you plugged in the VGA cable ?
Also it does not really matter which ground wire you use.

That's very strange... Maybe it's broke? I can't see it being a power issue.. I have a 220W Amplifier running calmly on a power supply under my desk :s
Try going to Radioshack or whatever it's called now.

I guess so...it was at a computer recycling center previous to me getting it...maybe the backlight or something is burned out...and yes the VGA cable is plugged in...how else would the computer turning on be a factor...
