I am looking to get a SSD for my system (Before you ask, no it isn't Windows XP, I'm just using a college computer right now. Yes, I'm procrastinating).
Now, I see that general advice is to avoid SSD's with SandForce controllers, and further searching seems to have landed me with two models:
Crucial M4 or the Samsung 830.
I am looking at the 128GB size. The Samsung seems to cost a little more than the Crucial, but claims faster speeds. Is this worth the increased price?
Plus there's also where to buy it. I have a 10% PayPal voucher which runs out in a few days time, so it'll be worth looking at eBay or sites that accept PayPal as payment.
For the Crucial, I can get a Slim one from eBuyer for £93, and a 2.5" to 3.5" OCZ bracket for £6 from eBay. (Totaling £99)
I assume there's no performance difference between the full size and the slim drive?
Plus is there a cheaper bracket? This £6 one is the cheapest I can find.
For the Samsung, I can get a slim one from Dabs via eBay for £117 (with the 10% discount) which includes the 'mounting kit'.
So which one is best to get, factoring in performance and the £18 price difference.
And one final question: I assume I can use regular SATA connectors with these slim drives? (I thought they were just the standard SATA connectors, but rather make sure)
Found better prices, both from Dabs. £90 for the Crucial and £103 for the Samsung.
Neither include a bracket, so it's an extra £6 on top of each.
To be honest, benchmarks seem to swing in Samsung's favour, I think I'm just going to go for the Samsung.
Get the Samsung. They're very reliable, I'd say second only to Intel's drives. They also use Samsung's own controller which is as fast as anything else out there.

Also Samsung makes the drives themselves, no NAND outsourcing or anything. So it's pretty much guaranteed to be a quality drive knowing Samsung's HW quality.
This is just so confusing, one forum says the Crucial is more reliable and faster, another says the Samsung is.
Plus a comparison review I looked at had the Crucial slightly faster is most tests, the Samsung being faster in others.
I've had no experience with Crucial. But everything Samsung I've ever owned has been great. TVs, HDDs, DVD Drives, my phone.
Crucial and Samsung are basically neck a neck in terms of performance and reliability
Brought the Samsung. With buying a bracket it came to £108, which I think is a great price.
Thanks for the help guys.
