SAN MATEO, Calif. (AP) -- As the wreckage of Asiana Flight 214 burned, Ye Meng Yuan was lying on the ground just 30 feet away, buried by the firefighting foam rescue workers were spraying to douse the flames.
No one knows exactly how the 16-year-old Chinese student got to that spot, but one thing is clear now: She was alive.
In the chaotic moments that followed - flames devouring the fuselage, those aboard escaping by emergency slides, flight attendants frantically cutting away seat belts to free
passengers - an emergency vehicle ran over Yuan, killing her.
The new details - released Friday by the coroner's office - compounded the tragedy for her family and confirmed the growing suspicions that emergency workers have had since soon after the July 6 crash: One of the three who died did so by rescuers' actions.
"There's not a lot of words to describe how badly we feel, how sorry we feel," said San Francisco Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White.
Yuan's family was upset after learning the details of their daughter's death and wants her body returned to China, San Mateo County Coroner Robert Foucrault said. "It was a difficult conversation," he said.
Hayes-White said she was trying to arrange a meeting with them and that the "tragic accident" would prompt a review of how the fire department uses the foam and responds to emergencies at the airport.

Holy shit. buried alive by fire extinguisher foam
that's fucked
Doesn't the foam essentially remove oxygen, so would she have suffocated :S?
Anyway, i feel bad for both the firefighters and the family.

it doesnt remove oxygen it just prevents it from getting to the fire
Ejected from a plane, run over by a firetruck, only to be buried by foam. I could not think of many worse ways to be killed.
"Yuan's family was upset after learning the details of their daughter's death"
I'm not surprised
This is such a tragic accident. I hope it doesn't become anything else.

i am indifferent
That's horrible and unfortunate, but I can't really put the blame on the rescue personnel. Imagine the chaos at the crash site.

Read the article
an emergency vehicle ran over Yuan, killing her.
To be fair it can be hard to see if she was laying in a debris field, those trucks should have dash cam's so it's only a matter of time to see if she was visible when she was struck

It says two different things, I have no idea why.
[editline]19th July 2013[/editline]
though I suppose she could had been ran over while also being covered in foam?

She was covered in foam, the truck ran into the foam, and ran her over
To anyone questioning how she was killed; she was covered in foam, then ran over, which killed her.
If you read the article, you would have seen:

Actually, I think the timeline is the other way around. She was run over (Because she was in the back of the plane that fell off, and the speeding vehicles didn't notice her for the burning plane), then got covered in firefighting foam.
Except it explicitly says she was alive when buried under the foam.
I hate to say it but unfortunately a mistake happened and it's not as if they did it on purpose. I really do feel sorry for the family, though. And of course I feel sorry that she had to pass away like that.

I literally quoted and bolded the part of the article that explicitly states the order in which things happened.
I am very very sorry for the families loss and this is not funny, but it will be joked about and I thought a truck backed over her, the foam thing. I am very sorry but I just imagined a cheesy B movie attack from the Blob.

WAT
....... WAT......
Accidents are one thing, but when an "accident" takes a life it is a much bigger deal and imo even if they 100% did this on accident the people responsible should do time, lose their job ETC this is fucking the opposite of what they are supposed to do
Running to a fire so quick your running over and killing the people in front of you..... how is this acceptable because the scene is "chaotic" LOL
She was covered in foam, the truck ran into the foam, and ran her over
I don't buy this.
Why would she be laying down........ this is obvious she was hit and then immobilized and then the foam happened, wtf
I literally quoted and bolded the part of the article that explicitly states the order in which things happened.
Use your brain... just because a story says this doesn't make it so, the logic is so shaky.
So she is just chilling, laying down on the runway? And then firefighters are careless enough to allow foam to cover her? Why didn't she fucking move? She was struck prior use the brain
I don't really think anyone can be held accountable for this, they probably didn't even see her at the time and were probably more focused on the blaze
Killing the one survivor no excuse fucking dumb.
the people responsible should do time, lose their job ETC
why?
why?
They should lose their jobs so they dont kill someone when trying to do the opposite.... again their job is to put out the fire and save people, they focused so hard on the fire THEY KILLED THE ONE FUCKING SURVIVOR @_@
YIKES @ the logic I am seeing.

haha so what, they did it on purpose or something???
haha so what, they did it on purpose or something???
Oh my god that is not the point.....
The point is to take them out of the position where they might make that mistake again..... if a doctor has ONLY killed patients in surgery at some point they wont let that jackass try again, how do you think these guys should be fighting fires still LOL SO FUCKING DUMB
I do not want these dudes driving fire trucks. Take every driver and fire them first step. They dont even know who did it such amateurs.
Edit: I have lived near and in San Fran my whole life and this story makes me sick.

Maybe she was shellshocked because, idk, she was in a fucking airplane crash

Or maybe from getting ran over, the first story I read about this which is gone now said that she was struck FIRST, obviously people like me are pissed @ the firefighters and they changed the story....
AGAIN SHE IS NOT GOING TO SIT IN FOAM AND DIE BECAUSE SHE IS SHELL SHOCKED she obviously was hit FIRST......
(We both said our points, I wont be posting much more)
Very sorry to anyone involved and to the family of this girl. Peace.
as a volunteer firefighter I am horrified that this happened. We go in to save lives at all costs, and this happens. Wasn't even anyone's fault really.

Hey tough guy, go ahead an get ejected from a landing plane, survive, and then tell me about how easy dodging that firetruck was.
Just stop.
as a volunteer firefighter I am horrified that this happened. We go in to save lives at all costs, and this happens. Wasn't even anyone's fault really.
Lets be logical for a second.. it is the person who ran the girl over, or the person who began spraying foam CARELESSLY not watching where it landed who are actually at fault.....
Someone DID do this and I think all the firefighters should have to pass tests again at the very least.
Lets also be real for a second, they could have not fought the fire at all, just got this girl to safety and the situation would have been better, it makes me sick that they fought a fire just to put it out while the only survivor is dying because of how careless you are spraying foam @ the fire..... :(
