I'm having trouble researching grow lights, and I know you dope fiends know a lot about them.
I'm trying to grow Mimosa, Acacia, and Cypress bonsais, as well as basil, sage, and mint. I don't intend to use any of the plants for intoxicating effects.
My new apartment doesn't get adequate light. I've been growing them for a year, and I would hate to give up now.
I am NOT looking for the most powerful bulbs on the market. I just need reliable bulbs with a warranty that can handle a 5ft x 5ft space.
I'm hoping to spend less than $250
I found these:

but I'm not sure if installing them would be easy.
I'm still waiting for an email from the company.
P.S. Does anyone know if exposure to LED grow-bulbs is bad for the eyes?

And no, exposure to LED's isn't going to hurt your eyes, obviously don't stare at them though :v:
And if they come on racks like that, installing them should be just as easy as setting them in and then plugging em in. Unless you're getting them on a timer or something complicated.
Would they need any kind of cooling system?

they get up to 113 Fahrenheit
LED lights are the most expensive grow lights on the market why would you choose them? LED's are badass though. For a 5x5 area(I have the same size grow) I suggest a 600w metal halide or hps it depends on what kind of light spectrum your plants need.

I just use a small fan connected to my reflector to cool my 1000w hps down.
I like the idea of LED because they save on energy costs, aren't as bright, and allow control over growing and flowering cycles. It would be nice to limit the growth of my bonsais and promote flowering.
I would prefer to save money on my bill than from buying cheap lights ;)
However, I don't have experience actually owning any LED grow lights. I've only used some cheap bulbs from Home Depot.

I don't think LED allow control over vegging and flowering considering it's always the same light spectrum..? The ballast I use lets me switch between HPS and MH for the different grow stages though which is neat but I don't switch to MH. I do agree with the energy costs though, HPS makes it skyrocket, I like using 125w or 250w CFL's for smaller grows. How tall do your plants get?
I read that blue light was better for growing and the red light was better for flowering. If I purchased both as separate units I could have some control.
Most are compound blues and reds though.
None of my plants are taller than a foot now. They might get to two, maybe 3 feet? It takes a few years to grow a nice bonsai.
If you do end up getting an LED grow light you should post pics of your grow room after setting it up!
I usually stick to my fusion powered trusty light source:

Also get this; if you use this method, the plants water themselves! You cannot lose! You just put them there, and they come out of the fucking ground!

Hell yeah they hurt your eyes, if I turn my 300w LED light on I can't even look at where it's shining, and if I get direct light for more than a few seconds everything turns green.
After the first few uses tho' you get used to the strong light and you'll be able to work with the plants without having to squint like crazy.
I haven't had the time to properly use the light yet tho', so can't say if it's good or not, but within a month or so I should be able to tell.
