Hi,
So. 64bit..
Can it still run 32bit applications?
Is it a large improvement over 32bit? Faster? What are the pros?
Any cons?
Oh and, do I need to have specific hardware to run 64bit?
Cons: Old 16-bit apps won't run (win3.0)
USB drivers (TI calculators etc)
Pros: Everything else
For example, you can't run something like kye and sokoban
32 bit apps will run.
Yes it can run 32bit applications, but apparently not 16-bit DOS subsystem applications (forgot where i heard this).
64-it x86 registers allow much more addressable memory. It is nearly limitless from what I hear. (sort of like NTFS file system).
cons?
not really.
Hey let's not get into a "How much ram can 64-bit handle" argument again, please. Just throwing that out there.
My experience with 64bit (Vista) has been a bit mixed
The only issues I have run into have been:
After installing a starforce-protected game (Trackmania Nations) it totally nuked my windows install :argh:
ATI tray tools was a ocmplete pain to get running due to the driver signing crap
Apart from that 64bit is the way to go.
And what about hardware? Will a Core2 E6550 run it?

Yes.

Any recent CPU will run 64bit

ninja'd
Ok, thanks!
yeah, it supports EM64T. Any Intel CPU that supports it, supports 64-bit OSes
Oh and what about games? Do you need to get special 64bit versions?
nope.
But if there is 64 bit versions, use them.
No. Seeing as 32 bit apps run on a 64 bit OS, you're fine. Some games even utilize 64bit OS's.
Great. Thanks for the info!
Just make sure you have a reason to use a 64 bit OS.
Full utilization of 4gb of RAM is a good enough reason don't you think?
Solution to running old 16 bit apps:
VirtualBox + old windows version.
They will run fast enough because they are old.
A very good reason.
