Parade participants and public officials huddled close by as all further events related to the parade were cancelled
Four people have been killed and 17 others injured after a train hit a parade float on its way to an event honouring wounded veterans in Texas.
Officials in the city of Midland say the crash happened at a Union Pacific railroad crossing at about 16:30 local time (2200 GMT) on Thursday.
Ten of those injured are in critical condition.
The float, carrying US veterans and their wives, was on its way to the Hunt for Heroes banquet.
The veterans were then going to participate in an all-weekend hunting trip.
National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Peter Knudson says his agency is investigating the crash.
According to officials, the float hit was the second being pulled along the parade route, the Midland Reporter-Telegram reported.
Oh wow, they were wounded vets :(
Tragic, whats the crossing like?
Oh man, imagine being the train driver
Oh god.
That's just awful
This is really sad. It must be terrible for the families of those killed and wounded. Just to think, something can go from such a happy event like a parade to a tragic one such as this... it really puts life into perspective.
What the hell do you even think after this kind of shit happens?
You're a wounded vet, you lost an arm fighting in a war that most people don't even want, and for the first time in a long time you're off to have some fun. Then a train hits you and kills your best friend.
It's like something out of a black comedy.
This is in my town.
:(

you think
"fuck my life"
I live about 10 minutes from Midland, really sad that this happened in my area. My condolences to the families of those who have passed.

Train drivers are told from day one that they will kill someone.
Fucking hell, being put in the position of the engineer where there's most likely absolutely nothing you can do to stop the machine you're responsible for has to be utterly horrifying.
Wow, that's crazy. I mean this whole situation is totally off the rails.
obongo's work

Obadonkadonk was driving the train.

In some threads, it's just too sad to make puns.

It's sad because it's true.
I hate to rain on their parade, but imagine telling the families of the deceased about it.
It must have hit them like a train.

that's...vague
Train drivers are told from day one that they will kill someone.
People rate funny, but it's often true. Train engineers have to deal with people racing the train constantly. Eventually they're gonna get that one racer who's just too confident.
I heard from someone that they're forced to retire if they kill too many people
Not sure if its true or not

I doubt it. It's not as if the train driver can ever be to blame, as long as they didn't run through a signal.
I am sorry but what a "float" is, in this context?
And was the "float" crossing the train track or, did the train derail, or, what the fuck even happened?
Really sad.
It's a shame that train conductors can't do anything to stop an impact from happening like that. I have conductor/engineers in my family and they told me some stories before about how horrific it is not being able to fully control how things happen on the tracks.
Railroad is saying the signals were working so that means the float went through the gates and signals as they were active
I heard about this on the radio this morning, happened not too far away
:(

A wheeled, decorated platform for a parade. They said it was being towed, so it must have been hitched to the back of a car and it was going over the train crossing
