In this thread we shall discuss grunge music.
BUT WHAT IS GRUNGE MUSIC???
Grunge (sometimes referred to as the Seattle sound) is a genre of music originating in Seattle that lasted from the mid 1980s to the mid 1990s. It is a sub-genre of alternative rock that emerged as a fusion of punk, alternative, and heavy metal. Inspired by hardcore punk, metal, and indie rock, grunge is generally characterized by heavily distorted electric guitars and contrasting song dynamics, and the grunge aesthetic is stripped-down compared to other forms of rock music. Lyrics are typically angst-filled, often addressing themes such as social alienation, apathy, frustration, sadness, fear, and depression.
The early grunge movement coalesced around Seattle independent record label Sub Pop in the late 1980s. Grunge became commercially successful in the first half of the 1990s, due mainly to the release of Nirvana's Nevermind and Pearl Jam's Ten. The success of these bands boosted the popularity of alternative rock and made grunge the most popular form of hard rock music at the time. However, many grunge bands were uncomfortable with this popularity. Although most grunge bands had disbanded or faded from view by the late 1990s, their influence continues to affect modern rock music.
Post-Grunge
Post-grunge is a subgenre of alternative rock that emerged in the mid-1990s as a derivative of grunge, using the sounds and aesthetic of grunge, but with a more commercially acceptable tone. This made post-grunge bands like Foo Fighters, Creed and Matchbox Twenty among the most commercially successful rock acts of the late 1990s and early 2000s.
let the headbanging begin
You have Mad Season there twice and it's Babes in Toyland but other than that bravo.
Though I wouldn't much consider Nirvana the pinnacle of grunge as many do.
Anyway some basic essentials AKA stuff I like

Admittedly I haven't really properly gotten in depth in grunge in quite a while, but Alice in Chains and Soundgarden were the first two bands I had the entire discography for.
Is Sonic Youth actually considered grunge? I thought they made it clear that they were NOISE ROCK or something. I love Sonic Youth and would love to add them to the thread but I'm not sure.
Candle, Goo, and Dirty sure do fit the grunge niche, but there are so many other albums that they released that have just been heavy feedback and distortions.
no
no
They have the elements, they even performed with Nirvana, lol. Just because Wiki says they're pure NOISE ROCK doesn't mean they don't have grunge elements.
uh ok but they're still not a grunge band. metallica played with corrosion of conformity that doesn't make them thrash metal
I don't bother with categorizing music, I'm just posting anything relevant to grunge. I do think Silverchair needs to be somewhere in the OP though.

shonen knife performed with nirvana too and they arent grunge. flawed argument

I'll remove them then; I really shouldn't jump to conclusions on a genre but I really love Sonic Youth and I thought it'd be nice to get some of them in this thread.
i love em too but yea not grunge sry

melvins?

melvins don't have shit to do with that
Is Sonic Youth actually considered grunge?
NO!!!
how dare you
depends on what grunge you're talking about. Early grunge (ala Soundgarden's early albums or Nirvana's first album, etc etc etc) was very very heavily influenced by the Melvin's "early" career.
sure but they still didn't sound like grunge.
they were way more sludge metal and Bleach definitely referenced it but the point of grunge was still to make it poppy in the vein of 60's rock.
and sonic youth definitely not, they predated grunge and they play fast disjointed punk.
well, when grunge became a commercial commodity, certainly, but it was a genre before nevermind broke, so I think there are two sides to the genre.
this side 1989:

and this side 1994:

i mean personally I think at least soundgarden maintained their integrity but a lot guys just cashed in on the trend (I'm looking at you stone temple pilots)
also i dont like alice in chains lol
[editline]2nd August 2012[/editline]
and yeah totally agree with you on the sonic youth thing (as stated above)
Even if Melvins aren't 100% "grunge" they definitely had enough of a spark to influence future grunge bands, and that earns them a right to be part of the grunge movement. That and Sludge Metal can pretty much be a heavy sub-genre of grunge.

I love this song
also the sonic youth spiel has been discussed debated and resolved so the sonic youth discussions can stop
i dont think toadies are grunge at all lol
Rubberneck is definitely a grunge album. It's just not as heavy as earlier grunge stuff like early Soundgarden or Tad. They're even catagorized as a grunge band on both Wiki and this website.
Even if they aren't full on grunge they're post-grunge. This is a grunge megathread, it can be anything from Nirvana to fuckin Marcy Playground.
toadies are like
a pixies rip off band
a good one doe.
Well Pixies are good anyways, better they rip off Pixies than rip off some shit band lol.
it wouldn't be grunge without ripping off the pixies
it wouldn't be grunge without ripping off the pixies
"I was trying to write the ultimate pop song. I was basically trying to rip off the Pixies. I have to admit it; when I heard the Pixies for the first time, I connected with that band so heavily I should have been in that band - or at least in a Pixies cover band. We used their sense of dynamics, being soft and quiet and then loud and hard." - (Kurt Cobain about how he wrote "Smells Like Teen Spirit", from a Rolling Stone interview by David Fricke, 01-27-94, reported by James R. Butcher)
p/ much
well toadies to me are more "pixies alternative" than they are any form of grunge, pop or original sludge based punk
Thanks for making the thread
I've always been a fan of Nirvana and others and this thread I think will hopefully help me find other great bands that I somehow haven't heard much about.
Happy birthday to Butch Vig, producer of Nevermind.
