New anti-self-defense ad dramatizes the shooting of Trayvon Martin
A new ad campaign against "Stand Your Ground" laws features a dramatic, stylized reenactment of the night Trayvon Martin was shot and killed by Sanford, Florida vigilante George Zimmerman. The clip from the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, posted by Talking Points Memo, starts with a figure resembling Zimmerman watching someone in the distance, supposedly Martin, while audio of Zimmerman's 911 call from that night plays over the images. The video closes when the Zimmerman figure stands while a teenager in a black hoodie lies on the ground. The camera pans to find even more bodies, all wearing the same black hoodie, all labeled with other states that have "Stand Your Ground" laws.
There's probably gonna be a big ass argument over this topic, so I'm just gonna say it's dumb and leave it at that.
Well allowing people to protect themselves is a great idea, how they're enforcing it selectively seems to be the problem.
You should be able to kill somebody thats putting your life in serious danger.
"laws shouldn't make more victims"
yeah because laws are going to be able to stop EVERY DEATH from EVERY PERSON at ALL TIMES.
Ohio does not even have a stand your ground law. We have a castle doctrine which is limited only to someone forcing their way into your home or your vehicle and you have to be in fear for your life or in fear of seriously bodily harm.
Any other time you have a duty to retreat. So...this thing is entirely wrong.
i think i'm the only one to say that this whole martin thing really shouldn't exist

I will still sleep with my 1911 under my pillow, fuck you.
This ad is missing the part where Martin is straddling Zimmerman and beating him.Why doesn't it show that?
Also why does the Atlantic Wire call Martin a victim of murder when Zimmerman was found not guilty even of manslaughter, let alone the second-degree murder charge.

That is not safe.

You need to use terrible situations when they're hot to get legislation pushed through. Its just playing politics.

It kinda shows it. The last time you see Martin and Zimmerman in the clip is a considerable distance to one another, and then when it cuts back to them outside Martin is magically in the same area Zimmerman was simply standing and watching him.
Unless of course Zimmerman zinged him with a shot from that distance and Martin walked over to join the piles of bodies laying out in the rain.

To some, Castle Doctrine is SYG laws and anything outside of your property would be seen as "enhanced" SYG legislation. It's a bit subjective and a grey area between regular self defense and full on SYG in public places. You still don't have the duty to retreat.

Ohio it's ironed out. If it's not a residence you are legally occupying or a vehicle you are legally occupying, stand your ground does not apply.
The only "victim" in the case of a cut through and through case in Ohio would be someone bashing their way into a home forcefully...would be the one inside the home or vehicle. So, again, this ad makes no sense.

Yeah I'd agree that it's misleading to compare the events of the Martin shooting specifically to Ohio law, I was just saying that Castle Doctrine could be seen as a tougher form of SYG law.
Seriously, why can't people get it through their heads that the Zimmerman trial didn't even involve SYG laws?
every thread we get about trayvon martin or anything related to it is opinionated as fuck.
"anti-self-defence", that's manipulative discourse like saying that the G8 protests were all about opposing free trade.

nah man, banning guns and banning people from protecting themselves clearly seems like the best solution.

Hey now calling it "protecting yourself" is opinionated
Yeah, Stand up to Stand Your Ground. You should just let someone who wants to beat and or kill you do it
Yeah, Stand up to Stand Your Ground. You should just let someone who wants to beat and or kill you do it
General self defense is already a legal precedent and has been in western law for hundreds of years. SYG are relatively new, as in the last 30 or 40 years new.
Stupid people make me sad :(
Except stand your ground wasn't used in this case.

The only good part about this PSA is the amazing footshot at 0:40
The Zimmerman case had nothing to do with stand your ground laws, why the hell does everybody think it does? If Florida didn't have a stand your ground law the outcome of the case would have still been the same.
This ad is missing the part where Martin is straddling Zimmerman and beating him.Why doesn't it show that?
It does. In the cut with the woman at the window, she seems to be describing an assault, then you hear the gunshot.
Fuck the law, if someone attacks you with the intent to harm or kill you and there is no other option or means of escape, you have the right to defend yourself, with lethal force if necessary.
They should be ashamed of themselves for making that video.
I'm reading the website and wow they're stupid. Their mission statement is "The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence seeks to secure freedom from gun violence through research, strategic engagement and effective policy advocacy." Then they turn around and post stupid generalizations of stand your ground laws.
The NRA’s laws represent a dangerous and unprecedented escalation in the use of force in the public space, allowing individuals to kill when they merely fear “great bodily harm” (i.e., a fistfight, shoving match, etc.). The concept of responding with proportional force has been obliterated. Additionally, “Stand Your Ground” laws remove the duty to retreat from a conflict in public, allowing individuals to shoot and kill even when they could otherwise walk away safely from an altercation.
They don't have a clue, if you shoot someone in self defense it is still investigated as a homicide. If the investigation proves that you where in the wrong and had no right to shoot/defend yourself then you're pretty much done for.
Instead why don't they try and help stop gun violence in Detroit or other areas. That would be more effective...
How can you possibly argue against self defense
If it has to end with one person dead, I'm sure the attacker would be the preferred death
