• So I'm thinking about building a computer

To start off, I've been thinking about building a computer for quite a while now,and just recently my dad got a raise, and a nice bonus. So recently my computer has been acting up, and I think its time for me to get a new one. My computer is fucked up,because when I first got it I had no real knowledge of computers (now I have slightly more). Just today my networking driver crapped out,and scared me near to death. I don't think my parents think I could actually do it. I have the feeling if I fuck building a computer up,that my parents would use it against me any time I would want to try again. Edit: My dad came home and just gave me a funny look when I mentioned I wanted to build it (He did say yes though) I'm half way between ,what you guys would call, computer "illiterate" and "literate", if you say something about computers I'll probably understand. I have no idea about driver manufacturers or things of the sort however. So I have a few questions. 1. What would I need to build a computer? 2. Do you have any recommendations (I'm a gamer)? 3. Where could I get the parts (I'm also willing to buy online, but I'd rather not)? 4. Any helpful tips? If this is the wrong place to post this, tell me and I'll snip it and try again.
Get parts from Newegg.com. Tips wise, It's just like building with Legos. They just snap into each other. It's extremely simple. Just fo to the PC Building sections and request for a build, stating your requirements and budget. Facepunch will help you a lot in this order.

1.cash, screws, cables/wires 2.i5, 1gb gpu, 500gb hard drive or more, 4gb ram, get a working power supply. Dvd r/w drive. 3.Buying online is usually A LOT cheaper. I made a pc for $600 that would've cost me 1.5K if i bought everything in a store. 4.Don't mess up, and tie cables together. Get a good heatsink. Threads can't be removed.
Threads can't be removed.
But they can be locked or DDT'd.
The somethingawful PC building thread is an incredible resource to picking parts, it is what I used to build my computer and I highly suggest you give it a read. http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3241890

a. The basic components are: Screwdriver, Case, Processor (CPU), Graphics Processor (GPU), Memory (RAM), Motherboard, Hard Drive, CD/DVD Drive, Power Supply. b. Peripherals can include, but are not limited to, Monitor, Keyboard, Mouse, Headset/Headphones, Speakers 2. Depending on the kind of games you enjoy, there are different types of computers. If you don't work in after effects and play Grand Theft Auto 4 all of the time, then I would suggest a Core i5 for the LGA 1156 platform. If you are into editing, development, map making for game platforms, you could go with an i7 (Though I am not sure if UDK or Source Editor is HT?) 3. Buy off of www.newegg.com, www.tigerdirect.com, or www.amazon.com I recommend Newegg because it isn't a cluster of buttons, it's simple to use, and it's widely used, and trusted. tigerdirect or amazon for if newegg doesn't have something. Usually amazon can have some good deals (like my i7, $250 for a i7 950, brand new). If you have to buy local, don't be afraid to go to Fry's, Microcenter, or CompUSA. I can't think of any other stores, but usually the employees are smart about building computers. At least where I'm from they are. 4. Recently there was a thread about a 12 year old who wanted to build a PC, its like 5 pages of information. Static - Don't build your computer on carpet, and don't walk around away from the computer to much, like get in a car for 30 minutes, come home, rub your feet on the carpet, take a balloon and rub it in your hair. That will cause a static discharge on an electronic device, and it can kill it. I worry about the Motherboard and GPU the most. Its not a large factor, just touch the case before you start building. Standoffs - REMEMBER THESE. If you don't, you run the risk of cracking your motherboard or linking it to the case. On the CPU there is a gold triangle or something, on one edge. It should line up with a gold triangle or something on the motherboard, that's the way it goes in. Read the PC Building threads so you can find a build that will fit your needs, or alternatively, post a build thread and we'll help![/release]
I order from TigerDirect. I'm in thir 2-day delivery zone :v:
Buy online? CompUSA/TigerDirect Microcenter Fry's Bestbuy :haw:
1. What would I need to build a computer? Glue, and lots of it, it's the only way to keep it all together 2. Do you have any recommendations (I'm a gamer)? Get the Nvidia 7300gs it's the highest performing graphics card on the market 3. Where could I get the parts (I'm also willing to buy online, but I'd rather not)? Walmart is your best bet 4. Any helpful tips? Always put the CPU in upside down as it keeps the whole case cooler and faster performing.
Read the quote for building tips. But in all seriousness just tell someone your budget and they will give you a good list of components and youtube will teach you how to build a PC.
How the hell do you put a cpu in backwards?
Glue [editline]03:31PM[/editline] Also OP, keep in mind: On placement of the CPU with pins facing the plastic hole board (or PHB) where the CPU fits into. There is a lever . DO NOT MOVE THIS LEVER AS THIS WILL CAUSE A SHORT IN THE BIOS AND CDROM PROCESSOR! Just jam the CPU in the PHB and you should be good to roll.
I've been doing all wrong for so many years!
