Hello,
I have been recently thinking about upgrading my PC, at the moment it's not the best of systems and I would like something that can run the newer games at an acceptable level whilst providing good graphics.
My current loadout is this:
Dell 0RY007 Motherboard
500W Power Supply (Upgraded from 300W)
Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 @ 2.33Ghz
3GB 667Mhz Ram (Upgraded from 2GB)
Nvidia 8600 GT Graphics Card
Now, my plan was to buy a larger case (The one I have is very small and has crap cooling), possibly some more ram and a better graphics card. I was also going to switch out to a different motherboard that I purchased a while ago but never used. I originally was planning on going with a ATi 4870 512Mb card. I have since decided that as it is my birthday in less than 2 months I will have the additional funds to purchase a higher end card. As I generally have a preference for Nvidia GPU's and through reccomendation I am currently looking at a GTX 260.
Upon looking at the specifications of this graphics card I am told that it requires a PCIe x16 slot on the motherboard. The motherboard I would upgrade to is a ASRock 4coredual SATA-2. On looking on their website it seems the PCIe slot is only 4x.
This confused me, as I researched it on Wikipedia and as far as I can tell from this picture 4x slots are the one on the top. My slot is the same as the 2nd and 4th from the top. Confusing.
Now I am thinking about buying a different motherboard completely. I am in need of help in finding one with the following specifications;
ATX form
At least 1x IDE port (Doesn't have to have this but it would be nice as I have some old IDE hard drives that would be useful to use)
Have 2 PCIe slots (So in the future I can use SLI if I want to)
Accept my current CPU (E6550) and allow for upgrades to quad cores in the future
Be able to run faster DDR2 ram that 667Mhz
