• Toy guns as props? UK

In my Media coursework, I have written, and am about to film a short piece of coursework, based on Mafioso in America. However, I have hit a wall when it comes to props. I need to get hold of a realistic "toy" pistol, but most bastard websites have the guns with bright orange plastic (obviously to make them distinguishable from real guns). Even some cheap BB guns would do the trick. The guns don't have to be really realistic looking, although they have to be reasonably realistic. As long as they aren't like £20, then I'm fine with it.
If you get a BB gun maybe you could spray paint it black, or just match it up using paint or marker pens, for example.

Find a shop selling cheap Chinese import BB guns, they tend not to have the orange plastic on them.
You can just remove the orange plastic.
My best advice is get a cheap plastic gun, and paint over the orange bit. And whatever you do, don't take it out in public. Otherwise, you might have problems with the police.
buy a cheap plastic squirt gun at a store and spray paint it black. [editline]05:52PM[/editline] fuck
get a real gun, unload it.
get a real gun, unload it.
Why don't people understand he is in the UK? Real guns are sort of illegal. You know, that thing where you get locked up for owning them. Also, I've had a thought. Some seasides have the dodgy shops which sell BB guns for a fiver each. You'll have to check to see if it's black but otherwise they should be reasonable. You might have a shop like this where you are but I've only ever seen them sold at the seaside.
Didn't we try and stop this shit with the VCR bill?
You'll just have to make do with the orange tip. Carrying a gun without the marking in public will land you in serious shit with the Police.
You'll just have to make do with the orange tip. It's generally shit like this :
go to http://www.justbbguns.co.uk/ and buy cheap ones then get some warhammer 40k black spray paint ( or any black made for plastic spray paint)
My best advice is get a cheap plastic gun, and paint over the orange bit. And whatever you do, don't take it out in public. However, as that part is left up to the officer on the spot to decide, Camudongo's advice still stands.

However, what I can do is ring and inform the police what I am doing, to avoid any of that shit. Apparently a few years ago, someone doing this course, who needed a gun, contacted the police and they had blanks and realistic replicas. My 6th form is really well known and respected in my local area, so maybe it'd be worth an attempt at doing that.
You might be able to get away with painting it if you are not going to walk around in public with it. [editline]11:22PM[/editline]
. It might also be worth visiting your local police department (after ringing them) to show them what the fake's look like.
Depends. You're between a rock and a hard place here. In the UK, you're allowed to own a realistic airsoft gun if you're 17+, you only need a UKARA to purchase from certain sellers. But you aren't allowed to have them in a public place, or as Hezzy said, you face an absolute bollocking with potential prosecution. Talk to the local police station.
or as Hezzy said, you face an absolute bollocking with potential prosecution. Talk to the local police station.
Not to mention you'll probably mobilise a firearms unit which will point guns at you and yell at you. I agree with this guy, talking to your local police station will help loads. They will explain the law and if they're any good they might even help you.
I know this shit inside out. If it's for re-enactments or acting or whatever then it's fine (So this would be allowed) BUT you have to apply for a VCRA expemption, which you have to pay a small fee for, be over 18 and i know for airsoft you have to get your site to stamp it to say that you're actually going, but i dont know what the process is with that for re-enactments and such. If you take a replica weapon out in public AT ALL (With or without exemptions) the chances are you'll have these fuckers: Come after you, and that won't be good, as they'll arrest and / or shoot you (If you point it at them, they make their bangsticks go bang and ask questions later). If you have a VCRA exemption you won't be charged with owning a replica firearm, but i don't know what would happen about having it out in public, although i'd assume there are penalties for that as well. One last note, it is illegal, with our without VCRA exemption, to paint a non-replica (Bright orange) gun to make it look like a replica, if you want a realistic one then you have to buy it and show the seller your VCRA expemtion certificate details, then it can be logged that you own that sort of gun and all that jazz.

Chinatown
Can't he ask the police for permission to show it in public while filming?
At sea side resorts go into one of those cheap shops and you'll find one for 99p.
At sea side resorts go into one of those cheap shops and you'll find one for 99p.
This reminds me of the time when most of my year went on a trip to france I think it was, and almost everyone bought a BB gun, I didn't see the point myself. However, the teachers got wind of it and confiscated every single one for the duration of the trip. When we got back you had to go and collect them from the music department and there was a pile about a metre high in the room of fake guns. It was rather impressive.
Has anyone ever considered painting the tip of a real gun orange?
Has anyone ever considered painting the tip of a real gun orange?
I'm writing that down. It could be a good plot device.
