A group of armed men in military uniform without signs of identification seized Simferopol Airport in Crimea in the early hours of Friday. About 50 people were armed and in the same gear as those who seized the buildings of the Crimean parliament and government on Thursday morning, eyewitnesses told an Interfax-Ukraine correspondent. The men arrived at the airport in three KAMAZ vehicles without license plates and signs of identification. A group of people with Russian Navy ensigns gathered at the airport's building. At the beginning, the armed men surrounded the airport's domestic flights terminal, then moved farther.
http://en.interfax.com.ua/news/general/193305.html I heard about this 3 hours ago on Twitter, now a source seems to confirm this.
oh god this is getting bad quickly.
These are hired merch and not Crimean people
These are hired merch and not Crimean people
source?
Just make a Crimea megathread already
Just make a Crimea megathread already
didn't garry decide that megathreads were 'unforumlike'
Spetsnaz has pulled this type of operation before. May possibly have been them.
Possible images, people are saying Sevastopol regional airport has also been seized. They supposedly rammed through the airport gates with KamAZ trucks. This is deteriorating so quickly. Its leaving a power vacuum.
This is becoming the Balkan War V 2.0 that I feared. Both sides are nationalist, both are on complete opposites in the political spectrum, and both have shown their willingness to shed blood to send a message.
So is Russia BASICALLY invading Ukraine?
bet its an opening salvo into operation:red dawn, a russian humanitarian aid mission
I really hope this doesn't get too bad, some of my family lives in Sevastopol
So is Russia BASICALLY invading Ukraine?
Crimea was a gift from Kruschev, and now Russia wants it back. They probably don't care about anything else. Crimea is valuable enough on its own callled itt
Didn't the ukrainian interim prez tell russia not to do this exact thing or there'd be military consequences
You guys jumped to a lot of conclusions too quickly, there is nothing to suggest that this is Russia's doing.
How mysterious. Is it mercenaries? The recently disbanded Berkut? Russians? Mossad? A new separatist group? It's like something out of a military thriller
You guys jumped to a lot of conclusions too quickly, there is nothing to suggest that this is Russia's doing.
This looks like a BTR. With that the urals and kamaz trucks and the uniforms and guns it seems like it'd be hard to not know these guys if they were a paramilitary, it's reasonable to guess they're affiliated with a government and only one government has anything to gain from militarily seizing Crimean strategic points.
Apparently they raised the Russian Naval Jack.
Hopefully it is just Bruce Willis filming the next Die Hard movie. On a more serious note though, I hope no one gets hurt.
I deeply believe that most of those pro russian protests in Crimea are fake and the protestors are ex Berkut units, this is a related video
You guys jumped to a lot of conclusions too quickly, there is nothing to suggest that this is Russia's doing.
Even if we are jumping to conclusions, it really probably is a bunch of Russian soldiers. Or, if not part of the Russian military, a group most certainly backed by Russia.
There is no evidence for this and it doesn't make much sense either
How does it not? The Russians want Crimea, and if providing material and physical support to Russian nationalists turns things in their favor, why would they not pursue that option?
I don't see anything that would suggest these men are Russian soldiers
I never said they were Russian soldiers, but they sure do have the equipment down for it.
I never said they were Russian soldiers, but they sure do have the equipment down for it.
The equipment could come from anywhere, there was like a dozen of military warehouses robbed during the riots Saying that Russia is behind this is an extremely bold claim to make
