Syria's head of antiquities was quoted as saying the temple was blown up on Sunday. The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that it happened one month ago. IS took control of Palmyra in May, sparking fears the group might demolish the Unesco World Heritage site. The group has destroyed several ancient sites in Iraq.
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-34036644
I hope that the idea of destroying antiquity sites dies with Isis, I don't want their inevitable replacements to continue this barbaric destruction of human history
I really don't see the point of ISIS blowing up old temples and cities. While the temples were used as a place to worship idols, the religions that founded the temples are all long dead.

Except they seem to forget that this is the digital age and that even with the relics gone, the data still exists

So like... actual Caliphates run by people who knew Mohammed controlled these cities.. and didn't do this shit.

That actually makes me so mad. I hope ISIS get what's coming for them, getting squeezed on multiple fronts by the Kurds and the Iraqi army/Iranian guard members
So like... actual Caliphates run by people who knew Mohammed controlled these cities.. and didn't do this shit.
They lacked the piety and resolve!
So like... actual Caliphates run by people who knew Mohammed controlled these cities.. and didn't do this shit.
Well, any idols were destroyed or defaced when they came through, but the actual temple sites were left alone or converted, preserving their architecture. They also didn't have TNT or 500lb bombs to detonate the sites with, if they even would attempt to destroy them. Also the Caliphates of old were very keen on preserving ancient wisdom and history and are the main reason why we know so much about ancient cultures, since they kept old papyrus scrolls and even cuneiform tablets in their libraries for study Baghdad in 1000 AD was the world capital of knowledge and philosophy
I hope that the idea of destroying antiquity sites dies with Isis, I don't want their inevitable replacements to continue this barbaric destruction of human history
The Romans called. All we could hear over the line was laughing.
Filthy iconoclastic fucks. Would be only fitting if they were wiped out from history in a fashion similar to how they do it.
If they touch Petra I will lose my shit
As callous as it sounds, the destruction of historic artefacts and sites makes me madder than when they kill people. I guess maybe it's because as horrific as all the murder is, they're not going to wipe out humanity, or even small groups like the Yazidis etc; but once something like this temple is gone, it's gone forever.
If they touch Petra I will lose my shit
Thank fuck Petra is in Jordan. ISIL would have to go through Israel to get there, and God knows Israel won't go down without one fucking hell of a fight.
Got to give them credit where it's due, they know how to hit where it hurts in the most cowardly fashion. Everything they do is so terrible and barbaric it's throwing spanners in everyone's works. Shit happens I suppose. Can't exactly be surprised when sites of historical significance are destroyed or threatened, especially in an environment ridden with violence. As depressing as it is to see, it's not at all surprising.

The truth is, as horrible as destroying culture is, it has happened in nearly every conflict in human history, ISIS is nothing special in this regard.
So like... actual Caliphates run by people who knew Mohammed controlled these cities.. and didn't do this shit.
pf, like they respect that stuff for 99% of isis fighters religion is just a reason to kill and destroy
