Students at UC Irvine have voted for a more “inclusive space” by banning the American flag on part of the campus. Under resolution R50-70 passed Thursday, the Associated Students of UCI voted to remove all flags, including Old Glory, from a student government work room on campus, according to the Associated Students website. A portion of the resolution reads: “(F)lags construct paradigms of conformity and sets homogenized standards for others to obtain which in this country typically are idolized as freedom, equality and democracy.” Authored by student Matthew Guevara, the resolution goes on to state that since “the American flag has been flown in instances of colonialism and imperialism,” its display “does not express only selective aspects of its symbolism but the entire spectrum of its interpretation.” After citing freedom of speech as a “valued right that ASUCI supports,” the resolution states that “freedom of speech, in a space that aims to be as inclusive as possible can be interpreted as hate speech.” The resolution concludes with the following: “Let it be resolved that ASUCI make every effort to make the Associated Students main lobby space as inclusive as possible. Let it further be resolved that no flag, of any nation, may be hanged on the walls of the Associate Student main lobby space.”
http://losangeles.cbslocal.com/2015/03/06/uc-irvine-students-vote-to-remove-american-flag-from-campus-lobby/
That is grade A bullshit right here.
Freedom of expression?
Californians
After citing freedom of speech as a “valued right that ASUCI supports,” the resolution states that “freedom of speech, in a space that aims to be as inclusive as possible can be interpreted as hate speech.”
that isn't wrong it has very little to do with the flag, though
They're seriously gonna listen to a bunch of whiny college kids? This is some real anti-Americanism going on here.
They're seriously gonna listen to a bunch of whiny college kids? This is some real anti-Americanism going on here.
it isn't so crazy that a campus that exists as a space for students to reside in would consider the desires of its customers, right or wrong and it isn't anti-american if their goal is to do it as a message of multiculturalism we're really missing a lot of context, even if they are doing it for a bad reason 'american' or 'anti-american' is a rather loaded phrase, anyway i don't define myself by the space i reside in or the beliefs of those around me
Freedom of expression?
your rights end where my feelings begin
your rights end where my feelings begin
they held a vote is that so horrible they removed all of the flags, not just the flag of the USA they simply thought it appropriate to remove all flags from a relevant room there wasn't a protest you are making this more of a big deal than it is just because it is hip to think that everyone is dumb and that they don't act thoughtfully
It's UCI. The damn campus is it's own little town full of elitist bio majors.
Imagine being so sensitive that you have to beg your school to help you because you're offended by a piece of multicolored cloth.
While I agree flags can represent something imperialist, it is also a form of identification and representation. I think its a bit silly to care enough to take it down in such a mundane situation, but I think it's even sillier to be upset that they took it down.
they held a vote is that so horrible
your democracy ends where my flags begin ?
Under resolution R50-70 passed Thursday, the Associated Students of UCI voted to remove all flags, including Old Glory, from a student government work room on campus, according to the Associated Students website.
In a room. A room. Who gives a fuck? It's not a car dealership; they aren't under some obligation to have American flags everywhere. Not only that, they aren't putting up any flags. And, yes, for a lot of places in the world the American flag is the thing painted on the side of the bombs being dropped on them. For a lot of people it definitely is a symbol of imperialism and foreign aggression. I also happen to think it symbolizes a lot of very admirable things, but it's not hard to see how other people would see different things when they look at the same flag. But, that said, the student government at Irvine is probably not the first place I'd look to find the oppressive boot of American imperialism...
but haha tumblr etc am i right guys
I don't understand what tumblr has to do with this? What even is the point of that post?
I don't understand what tumblr has to do with this? What even is the point of that post?
Its hip and cool to hate on tumblr for being overly sensitive.
I don't understand what tumblr has to do with this? What even is the point of that post?
referencing the strong attitude here that anyone in any way complaining about anything social is just over offended, at which point users bring up tumblr i don't believe that you actually didn't understand that about this forum
My college has a room of just flags. There's a flag from the nation of every student that has ever gone to the college. I'm not sure how many flags of the world we're missing, but there's a lot of flags in there.
Its hip and cool to hate on tumblr for being overly sensitive.
What does that have to do with my post?
asu of uc irvine decided to remove flags from a asu of uc irvine room i really don't see the issue this is being made out as far bigger than it actually is
What does that have to do with my post?
It was a parody of your post. He's calling you out on how you feel above people that are "overly sensitive". I can't be much more clear than that.
It was a parody of your post. He's calling you out on how you feel above people that are "overly sensitive". I can't be much more clear than that.
Usually parody is making fun of something somebody said, not something they didn't say.
Usually parody is making fun of something somebody said, not something they didn't say.
it seems you need a longer description, for some reason
"Imagine being so sensitive that you have to beg your school to help you because you're offended by a piece of multicolored cloth."
you are acting above others on grounds of a made-up twisted context, accusing the students of being overly sensitive i made a connection in what wasn't a very witty post, to the ridiculous anti-tumblr attitudes that reach the same effect you didn't need to say anything about tumblr in particular for anyone to draw that connection i think you're being intentionally difficult
Don't worry. Nobody in the UC system takes the student government seriously, elections (in my campus, at least) have <20% voter turnout and everything they do is criticized or ridiculed. Just dumb kids doing dumb things, nothing to see here.
This is nothing, except fodder for your insane aunt's chain e-mail. Student governments on campuses across the country are filled with over-compensatory, elitists dipshits. All of them looking for something to claim as a victory in their ~struggle~ ... to add more bullet points to their resume. 5 years from now another student government will overturn it because it diminishes the multicultural appreciation of fellow students who come from atypical national locations on the global geosphere space. Or whatever word soup bullshit they'll come up with.

I don't understand how that could possibly have anything to do with tumblr no matter how you twist what I say though.
i'm sure you have vast experience travelling between campuses and interviewing the local students to learn about their reasons for holding simple quick votes your insight surely leads you to the conclusion that everyone but you is an idiot
Your passive aggressive response leads me to conclude you are in student government. May your quick votes and lower case flippancy help you secure that assistant manager position at General Dollar.

I don't understand how that has anything to do with tumblr though.
can you cite this yelling and screaming they held a vote to remove all flags that anecdote about the meaning of the flag doesn't have to be their only reason to take them down as myself and others have detailed in this thread, there are many more reasonable reasons to take the flags out of that one particular room they held a simple vote to see if most of the people that care about it in one way or another, most likely during some regular weekly meeting, would like or dislike the change but despite this, despite that they could be very reasonable people you determine that they're just whining and screaming and couldn't possibly have any reasons yeah you're an elitist and you're intentionally shitposting so i'm done here
