Cengiz Ergun, Mayor of Manisa, cautioned that the latest death toll had not been officially confirmed. Initial reports said 17 people had been killed in the explosion and ensuing fire, and many more were trapped. It was estimated that 580 workers were underground at the time of the blast, though it is thought many of them managed to escape. It is not clear exactly how many are still trapped in the mine in the town of Soma, in Manisa province, about 250km (150 miles) south of Istanbul.
Source: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-27403061
Most of the time these sort of accidents are caused by sloppy mine management from the top down. Sad to hear that people had to die because of something that was likely completely preventable. Good ventilation and rock dusting keep these explosions from occurring. It is good at least to see that the miners in the image have their W65 self rescuers on. I wonder if it started as a methane explosion, or coal dust.
I didn't put two and two together, and thought some used a massive bomb as turkey filling.
Damn! 580 people underground at once? That seems like a huge amount, maybe it's normal, hopefully most of them did get out safe. Well, most of those who survived. I can't imagine being trapped in a mine, hopefully there's some sort of means of survival like what those miners in Chile had.
One of the workers turns out a 15 year old child worker, he did not make it. Death toll is 232 official, 350 unofficial.
Dam when I read the title I thought like a group of turkeys (the bird) had stepped on a mine and hilarity was insured but nope this is really sad and I hope that the ones that are still alive make it through.
Funniest thing is? The folks who couldnt win local elections; the opposition actually made up a great proposal for the inspections of the mines. The government side rejected it just because it came from them. It has been like 8 days since this happened. God all my anger. If they gave me the chance to get the guy off his throne i wouldnt blink twice [editline]14th May 2014[/editline] Oh wow just i was writing this i saw a little group protesting, guesss i'll join them
From what I hear the explosion was caused by failure of some sort of electrical machinery.
