Can I unlock a iPhone 3g?

I got one off my friend because he said you can't unlock it. But I am pretty sure that there is a way. I have been trying but to no avail, I tried redsn0w but it wants a itpw file or something along those lines which I don't have. Any help?

end of the day, unlocking it may give you some cool short term shit, but in the long term you're buggered

if you take it to one of those phone shops, you know the ones run by asians and that sell heaps of phone covers and do phone repairs, they can unlock it for you. it should cost around $50 but im in australia so it might be diffrent wherever you are.

Can you not be so stereotypical?
Just because a shop is dedicated to phone repairs and such, and is ran by an Asian owner, it doesn't mean he or she is capable of doing anything you ask for.

It may be a stereotype but it seems to be bang on, I've seen so many stalls ran by Asians or African Americans in markets that offer 5 minute unlock services and shops that do the same and since they obviously make enough money doing what they do I think they'll know how to do it.

I'm pretty sure it is possible to unlock it, and jailbreaking is not illegal.
