(CNN) -- The face of 15-year-old Aziza says it all.
Her mouth slightly agape, tears stream down her face as she glances around the inside of a helicopter with confusion in her eyes.
She looks completely exhausted, overcome with emotion. She cries the whole flight to safety.
The Iraqi air force and fighters with the Kurdish peshmerga carried out a dramatic rescue mission Monday at Mount Sinjar, taking supplies to desperate Yazidis and ferrying a handful of people out, including Aziza.
A CNN crew was on the flight that took diapers, milk, water and food to the site where thousands of people have been driven by ISIS, which calls itself the Islamic State.
CNN's Ivan Watson, who was on the chopper, described the mission as "heroic."
Teams hurled out bags and boxes of food from as high as 50 feet before approaching the ground.
"We landed on several short occasions, and that's where -- amid this explosion of dust and chaos -- these desperate civilians came racing towards the helicopter, throwing their children on board the aircraft. The crew was just trying to pull up as many people as possible," Watson said.
Soon, some of the trapped families -- including babies and the elderly -- were packed into the flight. A man held a water bottle for a woman trying drink, her head propped up on his shoulder.
Others didn't make it and were left behind as the helicopter pulled away.
Godspeed, you magnificent bastards.
I hope they can get the rest of the civilians out.
The US airforce must be able to provide support to these operations.
It sucks for the people who couldn't make it this time, but anyone getting out of there alive is a good thing. Let's hope they won't be the last to get off those rocks.
I can't wait to see ISIS pushed [del]out of Iraq.[/del] off earth.

fixed.

I can't wait for...
I forgot what. Who I was talking about.
Oddly beautiful. It's obviously impossible to airlift everyone out of there with Iraq's crumbling resources and military, but just the quick fly-in, drop vital supplies and get the most vulnerable people out so quick is pretty amazing to see.
Watch as ISIS start bringing MANPADs to the mountain siege after this, though...
Remember the influx of Western fighters Syria and Libya and all that got during the Arab Spring (people who thought they were doing the right thing)? I wish this cause got that, instead. Since it's actually a good cause, saving innocent lives and fighting extremist scum. Hell, I'd join up if I could. It's absolutely disgusting what ISIS is doing, and I'm glad the Peshmerga are fighting them back.

I've heard of both Kurds coming from abroad to fight and extremists coming from abroad for ISIS. Pretty much for the same reason. They feel it's their duty. Both factions expect all able bodied males to fight on the fronts.
Sounds like Operation Babylift on steroids and trying to get everyone out not just the children.

Yeah I agree when an airplane has a maintenance failure it's tragic, but the mission itself was far more successful that the individual incident you're posting. 153 fatalities is awful, but when the operation gets 110,000 people out of a combat zone it's a worthwhile mission.
Maybe the US can spare a few helicopters to just shuttle people out.
Iraq has C-130's. Would be cool if they could find a spot smooth enough to land some and have an operation to defend the routes/landing area and bus a lot of people out.
Brings tears to my eyes to see all these people in shock. The situation in the region is truly turning out to be a tragedy.
Can anyone give me links from those ISIS massacares/montage of killing innocents?

I love it that the Peshmerga gave up some of their helmets to the kids in order to protect them.

That's the Iraqi Air Force, not the Peshmerga. I find it hard to believe myself, but apparently the Iraqi military isn't entirely worthless after all.

The guys are wearing Kurdistan flags though. Either way though, this is amazing news to see that some form of morale is being raised in Iraq. I hope that the Kurds and Iraqis are capable of taking this victory, and using it alongside US air support to send the ISIS running.

Well will you look at that. It appears I was mistaken.
This will make the 6 o'clock news worldwide and will probably dominate the media until the weekend. After seeing that, you can tell that ISIS / ISIL have really stepped their game up. I think that it truly is possible that we could see coalition troops back on Iraqi soil.
reminds me of Saigon
