• The effects of Music on mood ?

It's for some college work, only decent subject other than drugs I can get from personal health ?
Music that "effects" me most are the slow moving things. Ambient or Drone. The things that give me a thrill are the loud funk styles or prog rock. Something that unexpectedly explodes you know. Hope that helps you.
I usually listen to music to entertain myself or set the mood for something (e.g listen to my own heavy metal instead of the Killing Floor soundtrack when I'm playing it). Usually something with a "lighter" sound will make me excited without that feeling of anger. E.g.

Usually something with a "heavier" sound gives me a small feeling of excitement with a feeling of anger.

Having listened to Nicolas Jaar's new album, Space Is Only Noise, it gave me a feeling of relaxation with mystery. Some say singer/songwriter is depressing to hear, but I personally think it's a joy to hear.
Happy: Sad/Moody: Angry: As in, these are the feelings I have when I choose to listen to these tracks, not necessarily the feelings they invoke in me.
I think the moods music produces in the listener are less superficial than how the sound i.e. sad/happy. Music is really it's own language which is independent from our moods and it is really our culture that translates these into emotions/moods.
Music doesn't really influence my mood, it is usually the mood that influences my choice of music or the type of mysic that I choose to make.
Music doesn't really influence my mood.
Yeah but if it doesn't make you feel anything, then what's the point. [editline]3rd January 2012[/editline]
it is really our culture that translates these into emotions/moods.
Very true. It's how one relates to what is going on in the music.
Yeah but if it doesn't make you feel anything, then what's the point.
Oh wow, did I ever say that? Nope. Notice the word ''really''? And mood is something different than feelings. Damn. Learn to read. Damn.
mood is something different than feelings.
Okay... what is your mood at this moment? oh damn.
Okay... what is your mood at this moment? oh damn.
My mood is good, however I am feeling slightly annoyed towards you.
Okay... what is your mood at this moment? oh damn.
I think he's saying that listening to something like Death Grips (just as an example) is not necessarily going to put him in an angry, violent mood, however it can still make him feel good and exhilarated.
My mood is good
It's good because you feel good, isn't it? [editline]3rd January 2012[/editline]
I am feeling slightly annoyed towards you.
You're always easily annoyed. :>
It's good because you feel good, isn't it?
Sure. A mood can perhaps be the same as a feeling but a feeling isn't always a mood.
You're always easily annoyed. :>
You would be the same if you had internet as terrible as mine. :v: [editline]today[/editline] Wow AK'z, you're terrible at reading between the lines.
Sure. A mood can perhaps be the same as a feeling but a feeling isn't always a mood.
Mood is a state of mind imo. If you think about it, you always ask yourself "what do you feel like listening to?" [editline]3rd January 2012[/editline]
Wow AK'z, you're terrible at reading between the lines.
Yeah, you said damn between each line.
Mood is a state of mind imo. If you think about it, you always ask yourself "what do you feel like listening to?"
Let's leave it at that. We have derailed enough threads together.
You think that's derailing? You seem to be forgetting the "Worst things you've heard about music" thread.
You think that's derailing? You seem to be forgetting the "Worst things you've heard about music" thread.
I know all too well what derailing is (perhaps a little too well), it is what we are doing right now. Anyway to keep it a bit on topic, music can magnify moods but I think that the mood itself has more influence on the choice of music.
how's that essay going?
I hate it when I'm talking with someone, laughing and all, and then suddenly the playlist drops something like "Don't Cry".
Listen to some boards of canada. Some of their songs invoke feelings in me that I had never felt prior to feeling them. For example, the first time I heard Corsair, I realized what it felt like to die. And Olson invoked emotions of isolation during a voyage into the unknown. And some of their songs, like Gyroscope, resurface memories. This one in particular reminds me of attempting to finish my math homework while greatly overheated from a fever. You should really check out their stuff, excellent music that forces you to feel emotion.
Like Franke said, I usually choose music based on my current mood, and then that music sort of enhances it. The music that affects me the most is probably certain screamo and math rock bands. It just makes me feel more than any other types of music.
Not sure how in depth you really want to go, but look for a book called "This is your brain on music". It's got all the information on how/why certain sounds effect how we feel.
There's something about how Soul makes you feel that kind of "exilerated" feeling. Apparently its inspired by old gospel singers who could put people in a state of euphoria just with their voice.
You couldn't accurately measure the affect of music on mood without specialized equipment also assuming you could it would be subjective and hard to really understand correlations This question isn't much use as music of whatever type affects whatever kind of person differently. It's valid to say that music does in fact influence mood but the strength and cause of that influence varies short answer is yes, but it depends on the person and the type of music being played
short answer is yes, but it depends on the person and the type of music being played
I don't think it depends solely on the type of person, because all humans are capable of relating to someone elses experience, or at least try to.
short answer is yes, but it depends on the person and the type of music being played
But there's still an underlying understanding of sound that everybody can identify. People who know nothing about music/different genres can still hear a minor chord and say it sounds "sadder" than a major chord.
You couldn't accurately measure the affect of music on mood without specialized equipment also assuming you could it would be subjective and hard to really understand correlations
im sorry, what have you have you done with the real enguage?
You couldn't accurately measure the affect of music on mood without specialized equipment also assuming you could it would be subjective and hard to really understand correlations
It doesn't need to be a scientific enquiry it's more about does this produce the emotion in a person at all.
The effect on my mood depends on the mood itself - for example, sad songs make me sad, while aggressive songs don't make me aggressive
