And You Thought Jersey Shore Was Bad: CBS is getting a "Draw Something" TV show
If at first you have a ton of success, followed by a good amount of user drop-off, try, try again. Or, just sell your smartphone app as a reality show and let Hollywood deal with the rest of it.
We're not making this up: The smartphone app "Draw Something" has been picked up as a potential "reality pilot" by CBS. According to Deadline, the show will feature the team of Ryan Seacrest, Michael Davis, and Adam Sher as executive producers, but there's no word yet as to when the proposed Draw Something show might air.
However, the details of what such a show might encompass have already hit the airwaves:
"Each week, teams of celebrities and everyday users will test their skills in front of a studio audience to earn money and big laughs. Viewers can also play along at home for a chance to win prizes and compete with the celebrities."
So, it's not as if CBS plans to drop off 12 people on an island and force them to draw things in order to win food, shelter, and voting immunity. It sounds as if Draw Something will have a bit more in common with a standard TV game show than the connotations that the phrase "reality pilot" brings forth. Perhaps that's just Hollywood-speak.
Draw Something now joins the ranks of Web icons like "Shit My Dad Says," another popular digital property that made the jump from the mobile world – or Twitterverse, in the case of the half-a-season long Twitter stream turned William Shatner-starring sitcom – to prime-time television.
Zynga recently took to the airwaves to help defend Draw Something, which has suffered a bit of a popularity drop ever since the company purchased the app in mid-March of this year – for the low-low price of $183 million. The app's since dropped from the top of the charts to around 18th place on Apple's App Store, and into the mid-20s for "highest grossing apps" on the platform.
While the real population numbers for the app's audience haven't been released, the Wall Street Journal reported in May that Draw Something's Facebook logins have dropped from around 14.5 million daily users at the app's highest to around 7.6 million. Gone are the days when players would finger-paint themselves up approximately 3,000 drawings per second.
That said, Zynga has been actively working to court new Draw Something advertisers, like DreamWorks, and add new features to the game to increase its "evergreen" appeal.
What? A TV show based on a smartphone app? What is the world coming to? First they made a show about the Annoying Orange, and now this.
Sounds like a fun gameshow. What's the problem?
I hope a smartphone app for this comes out, kinda like that game they made based on the Battleship movie

that sounds extremely fucking stupid
angry birds is a game that's been remixed trillions of times in flash... and it's one of the remixes
I can see this turning out in a fine game show that could be pretty hilarious if executed right
I really don't see the problem

Yeah, but the reason it became so popular is marketability. It's cute, bright, colourful characters are a lot easier to sell that some of the other games that are just like Angry Birds. It's all about the marketing.
What is Draw Something anyway, it sounds like Pictionary.
nope

Someone draws something and the other has to guess it
Simple as that

which is the only reason it works. Even though there are some that are amazing. (I remember a catapult style medieval version with kings / nobles / knights and shit, was cash)
lol xD pretty colors guys!

they should make a movie about instragram where a bunch of hipster faggot photographers get together and pretend that they're professionals
Ohh... never mind. That's a cool idea. Except if I were participating on that show, it'd be way over 30 minutes because I go try hard with some drawings.

Not sure if you wanted the name but that's crush the castle. Anyway on topic, This actually seems like it could be interesting. I already watch people play it on youtube and the such and it could be neat.

So it's pictionary, right.
I gotta agree, this could be decent if they don't fuck it up.
What is Draw Something anyway, it sounds like Pictionary.
It's a mobile app that was made from the same game Draw My Thing on omgpop.com
so yes, it's pictionary.
i wonder how many contestants will just type out the word

Fuck this gay earth.
I'm going to Alpha Centauri.
When was the last time CBS produced a good show? The Twilight Zone?
I'm okay with this.
This can only succeed.
it's just a pictionary-based gameshow that's riding off the name of a currently very popular phone app
calm down

Considering that the Angry Birds promo cartoons made by Rovio so far were sufficiently entertaining, this ain't that horrible.
At first I thought this was the stupidest thing I've ever heard of but now that I think about it, it wouldn't be that bad as a game show.
would you get in legal trouble if you drew a dick?
would you get in legal trouble if you drew a dick?
FCC would slam you with a $100,000 plus fine.

Wouldn't doubt it
I always liked Draw My Thing/Draw Something, good place to waste time in, and it seems like a good basis for a gameshow.
I don't see the problem here
At first I thought it was dumb but then I realized that if done right it could be good but then I read that teams of celebrities would be competing against each other for money. Why give them more money? Shouldn't it be regular people competing I would figure those celebrities going on the show to compete would be given money so they would be on the show anyway.
There's a Japanese TV show like this. Only seen a part of an episode since I can't speak the language, but it put a few children against a few adults. Was pretty funny regardless
We should bring some of those Brit Panel shows over to the US. Then again the US doesn't have any universal funny comedians that everyone likes like England does
