[sp]on a side note, he looks a lot like Herman Cain[/sp]
Elevator security camera footage released Monday shows a Northern Kentucky police officer fumbling with his work-issued firearm moments before shooting himself in the stomach.

Jouett almost drops the weapon when it gets tangled in his coat. The gun fires into the elevator door as he tries to catch it.
A bullet then ricochets and hits Jouett in the stomach, according to Capt. Mike John, District 1 Commander for the Cincinnati Police Department.
In the footage, Jouett crumples to the ground. His wife pulls out her cellphone as she exits the elevator and then re-enters. Jouett is eventually able to leave the elevator with his wife’s assistance.
Jouett was conscious and alert when medics and Cincinnati police arrived on scene. He was transported to University of Cincinnati Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Ed Bridgeman, a retired police officer with 35 years experience, watched the security camera footage and critiqued what may have went wrong for Jouett.
"It's something you should probably give a little more attention to," said Bridgeman, who is now the head of the criminal justice program at The University of Cincinnati's Clermont campus."It looks like he was carrying on a conversation. "He was juggling with the box and then he was obviously juggling with the firearm."
"kills self"
Misleading title. There was nothing stating he died.
Wow police brutality, if he used a tazer this never would have happened

Do you think OP even read the article?
On Monday, the Erlanger officer told WCPO he was at home and on the mend. He said he was instructed to not talk about the incident.
What is with that title
He probably meant "shoots self"; perhaps a mod will change it
<snip> late
Hopefully he's okay so we can make fun of him.

I fucking love when the OP fails to read the exact thing they are actually quoting.
Very clever

yeah, why didn't he shoot himself in the leg??
yeah, why didn't he shoot himself in the leg??
The stomach didn't put his hands in the air, plus we got evidence the bullet actually hit the back, the stomach was escaping the police, Jouett did nothing wrong
Glad you guys are making a total mockery of this guys accident.
Well done.
Elevators always give me a funny feeling in that moment where they first start to move. Maybe that's what happened, just as he was handling his gun the elevator moved and it caused him to put his finger on the trigger and pull.

when handling a gun in a non-combat situation, you really should be holding it without your finger above the trigger, with all fingers around the grip (unless I'm mis-informed)

trigger finger on the slide or above the trigger guard and trigger
that being said the firearms training of most cops is pretty bad

Generally this is good, keeping the finger out of the trigger guard until you need to use it.

And they are really likely to have glocks, which lack a manual safety. That doesn't bother some people, but I appreciate a manual safety, external hammer, and a decocking lever. Police service weapons should have a lot of things between them and an accidental discharge not just Glock's bullshit trigger safety.

Thank god, the buzzkill police have arrived! Try not to shoot yourself with your own lack of humor.

Not even like a switch?
And next to that, he has to have one in the chamber to be able to fire right?
Why is there one in the chamber when he's out with his wife?

I am more of wondering, is there really a point having a round chambered before you have a have a reason to believe you will be using a gun, soon?
Chambering the round shouldn't take longer than a second and if you are just casually cruising around, I don't see how's that a time you wouldn't have.
If we just want to post about police idiocy for the hell of it, I laughed a lot harder at the police chief who shot his wife in bed because apparently he's Jason Bourne and needs to sleep with a loaded weapon at all times. Or, you know, maybe wifey wasn't on board with whatever he wanted to try that evening...:v:
Happily, she's alive and in good condition.
Cincinnati's finest.

Modern weapons are extremely safe to carry with one in the chamber... this was just bad circumstance and poor judgement on his part. If you're carrying a gun for the defense of your person and others, you carry it the right way - ready to fire. If you need to use it, the last thing you want to be doing is fumbling around (trust me you will be fumbling) trying to chamber the round.
You'd be an idiot if you didn't carry your gun with a round chambered. It means crucial seconds are lost in a life and death situation.

No one's exactly celebrating it, but...

I saw the video a while ago and i think he should have been a lot more careful when handling a gun.
That's what you get for using cheap quality guns.
He earned it, don't take it out of the holster if you don't need to use it, simple safety right there.
Yeah... if you have to tinker with your pistol that has live rounds you DONT FUCKING POINT IT AT YOURSELF. Every fucking time I hear this shit I get frustrated to all hell. What is so hard with gun safety? Keep your finger off the god damn trigger and always treat it as if it's loaded.
