Maybe if they actually had some sort of approval process that requires them to at least glance at what's being added to the store prior to it being listed this wouldn't be a problem.
I refuse to believe someone looked at this and went "yup that's original, worthwhile content that should be on our store," for example.
I think Google needs to do things to make people more aware about the notion that their phone should always have an anti-virus. Maybe have something like "Due to malicious activity as of recent, we are in the middle of removing harmful apps from the Google Play Store. In the meantime, please take a look at our antivirus recommendations".
Whatever phones are infected with the malware on Google Play is well.. Damage is already done. To me, minimizing further damage should be the focus and awareness is the first start.

The Google play store is supposed to be your anti virus. If an app gets flagged by Google as malacious it's automatically removed from your phone.

you do realize an antivirus on android can literally only go "yup here's the apps you have installed"
and maybe look at some settings apps changed
Antiviruses in the current era do more harm than good, specially in android that doesn't really need it due to it's sandboxed platform and already scarse perfomance, making the OS avoiding these malware is really easy
not quite, for computers or anything where you can download software form the internet in general, antivirus of some sort is pretty important. even a free, simple one will do the trick.
but with phones, where we get applications from an appstore, I expect that appstore to make sure no malicious apps are being distributed
